Gym Devils’ Season Ends at NCAA Regional Finals

(Berkeley, CA)  The impressive run came to an end for Sun Devil Gymnastics as the team placed fourth at the NCAA California Regional Final on Sunday with a 196.750.

No. 3 seed Cal and unseeded Stanford advanced to nationals with a 198.275 and 197.575, respectively. No. 6 seed Denver placed third with a 197.450.

Notable Stats

Arizona State’s season ended with their second-straight regional finals appearance, third in the last four years. ASU was also one of four unseeded teams in the country to make the final 16 teams advancing to regional finals.

Freshman Halle Gregoire scored the highest score of the night for the Gym Devils, earning a career-high 9.950 on vault. It’s the second 9.950 on vault this season for ASU and the sixth across all events.

There were five 9.900s for Arizona State in the meet. Three were on floor from Emily White, Jada Mangahas and Hannah Scharf. Cienna Samiley got one on bars (her second in a row) and Kayla Lee earned one on beam.

It was the final meet for six Gym Devils: Cassi Barbanente, Skye Harper, Cienna Samiley, Hannah Scharf, Anaya Smith and Gracie Reeves.

The Gym Devils extended their streak of meets over 196.000 to 13 in a row. It also is the 11th-straight meet with 49-plus on all four events.

Rotation One: Floor, 49.375

Thanks to three-straight 9.900s to close out the rotation, the Gym Devils got off to a strong start on floor. They matched Friday’s regionals score of 49.375, which is the second-highest floor score of the season, and had the second-best event score after the first rotation. White, Mangahas and Scharf all notched 9.900s. For Mangahas, that set a new season high for the senior. 

Rotation Two: Vault, 49.075

Despite a career-high 9.950 from Gregoire, the Sun Devils took a step back on vault, falling to fourth in the standings. Gregoire’s score matched the highest score on vault and any event for ASU this year. The next best score was a 9.850 from Mangahas, but the rest were 9.775 or lower.

Rotation Three: Bars, 49.225

It was a solid rotation on bars for ASU as all scores that counted were a 9.800 or better. Samiley kept her hot streak going on bars, scoring her second-straight 9.900 on the event, matching her season high. Two 9.850s came from Gracie Reeves in the lead-off spot and from Mangahas.

Rotation Four: Beam, 49.075

Lee started the rotation with a 9.900 in the lead-off spot, but the Gym Devils struggled down the stretch. In her final routine as a Sun Devil, Scharf earned a 9.850.
