(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (27-8, 14-2 in ACCAC) rallied in both games on Thursday at the West Campus Aztec Field against Mesa Community College (2-18, 1-15).
The Aztecs hit five home runs and scored 23 runs on the day as they are now on an 18-game winning streak. Their streak matches the 2018 Men’s Soccer team, who won their last 18 games en route to the National Championship.
Freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) picked up a win on the mound and also finished her day at the plate going 5 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) went 2 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, four runs scored and three walks. Freshman Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) picked up the other win in the circle.
Game 1: Pima Aztecs 8, Mesa Thunderbirds 3
The Aztecs rallied off seven straight runs to take the lead for good.
Zepeda hit her 13th home run of the season as she put the Aztecs on the board in the 1stinning. The Thunderbirds took the lead in the 3rd inning with two runs.
Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) laid down a bunt to the third base side and pinch runner Jasmine Majonica (Flowing Wells HS) scored to tie the game at 2-2.
The Aztecs scored another two runs in the 5th inning after Chacon hit a two-run RBI double to drive in freshmen Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) and Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) to make it 4-2.
The Aztecs tacked on another four insurance runs in the 6th inning. Martin hit an RBI double to score Rivera, and Marx followed with a two-run RBI single to plate sophomore Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) and Martin to put the score at 7-2. Marx came around to score after Waddell’s RBI double with one out.
Marx finished the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Martin was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Chacon went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Zepeda finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Waddell went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Rivera was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Waddell picked up the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (three earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Game 2: Pima Aztecs 15, Mesa Thunderbirds 1 (5 innings)
Mesa got on the board in the 1st inning, but the Aztecs scored 15 unanswered to earn the run-rule win.
Thompson gave up hits to the first two batters of the game but held the Thunderbirds in check the rest of the game as she pitched all five innings, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk on 75 pitches.
Zepeda tied the game with an RBI double bringing around Martin, who led off the 1stinning with a double. Chacon capped off the inning with her sixth home run of the season driving in Waddell to make it 4-1.
Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a three-run homer to left field on a 2-0 count scoring Waddell and Chacon. Rivera followed with a solo shot to left field as well to make it 9-1 as part of a five-run 3rd inning.
The Aztecs scored six runs in the 4th inning. Freshman Monique Bustamante (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI single and two batters later, freshman Nevaeah Bracamonte hit a three-run homer to plate Bustamante and freshman Bella Medina (Canyon del Oro HS).
Waddell hit RBI singles in each inning the Aztecs scored in as she went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Bracamonte finished 1 for 2 with three RBIs and a run while Ortiz was 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Chacon finished 1 for 1 with two RBIs and two runs. Zepeda closed out the game going 1 for 2 with an RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
