Luca Petovary Earn’s MPSF Player of the Week for Third Time this Season

The Senior had 22 goals this past weekend in California

(Tempe, AZ)  Continuing her stellar senior season, Luca Petovary posted 22 goals, an assist and two steals in four games this past weekend in the Convergence Tournament, leading the Sun Devils to a perfect 4-0 weekend. Petovary was named MPSF Player of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

It’s the third weekly honor for Sun Devil Water Polo this season, and her sixth career honor, embarking on her fourth Player of the Week award of her career to lift the Sun Devils to a perfect weekend in California. It mark’s the second time this season she’s surpassed the 20-goal mark in a four-game span this year.


On Saturday in a win against Mount St. Mary’s, Petovary went a perfect 10-for-10 from the field, for 10 goals and an assist, setting an ASU and MPSF record for most goals in a game, during the win, she broke the Sun Devil record for most goals in a season, surpassing Alicia Brightwell’s mark of 84 goals set in 2013.

She followed up the performance with a five-goal game on five shots, against Azusa Pacific and added a steal in the team’s 15-8 win, going a perfect 15-for-15 Saturday. 

On Sunday, she managed another five goals against Concordia-Irvine in the team’s 11-3 win, and finished her weekend with two goals against Biola. 

Petovary now owns two of the highest-scoring games in Sun Devil history. Earlier this season against Marist, where she tallied nine goals and three assists for 12 points. In her career, she has six games with 7+ goals, and 16 games with 5+ goals. Lastly, Petovary has four games with 10+ points or more in her career, with three coming in the last month of play.

Over the weekend, Petovary became the second Sun Devil in program history to surpass 300 points and became the seventh MPSF player of all-time to score 100 goals in a season, and is the first Sun Devil to do so. She is 47 points from tying Sun Devil Hall of Famer Addison McGrath’s 348 point mark.

The senior is also three points away from breaking the season record needing 124 points, and she’s eight goals away from becoming the all-time leading goal-scorer in ASU history, needing 238 goals.
