Camilla Zepeda hits two homers with six RBIs, Thompson fans 10 as Softball sweeps Glendale CC

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (15-8, 4-2 in ACCAC) scored 24 runs on the day as it picked up two wins on the road at Glendale Community College (5-13, 3-7) on Tuesday in an ACCAC conference matchup.
Sophomore Camilla Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) had her swing working as she finished the day 6 for 8 with six RBIs and four runs scored.  Freshman Alyssa Lopez closed out her day going 3 for 6 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshmen Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) and Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) got the wins on the mound.

Game 1: Pima Aztecs 13, Glendale Gauchos 0 (5 innings)

The offense clicked as it scored in every inning to pick up the run-rule victory.

Zepeda put the Aztecs on the board in the 1st inning with a solo homer to left field. She was part of the five-run 2nd inning as she hit a two-run RBI triple scoring sophomore Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) and freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) to make it 6-0. Zepeda led off the 4th inning with a single and scored to make it 9-0. She reached on an error in the 5th inning and scored once again.

Lopez and Salazar had back-to-back RBI hits in the 2nd inning. Freshman Alyssa Noriega had an RBI single in the 5th inning.
Zepeda fell a double short of hitting for the cycle as she finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Lopez went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Mina Chaco
(Tucson Magnet HS) was 2 for 3 with a run.

Thompson pitched a five-inning shutout as she gave up one hit with 10 strikeouts and one walk on 74 pitches. She also helped her own cause by going 2 for 4 with a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 4th inning and two runs scored.

Game 2: Pima Aztecs 11, Glendale Gauchos 2

The Aztecs picked up where they left off in the first game scoring runs in the first four innings and earning another run-rule win.

Zepeda got her double that she missed from the first game as she hit an RBI double in the 2nd inning to score Lopez and make it 5-0. She went yard for the second time on the day with a two-run shot to center field, scoring Marx and making it 9-0 in the 4th inning.

Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run RBI single bringing around Waddell and Chacon to make it 3-0. Freshman Stephany Montoya (Kofa HS) hit a solo home run with two outs in the 3rd inning to put the score at 6-0. Marx, freshman Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) and Ortiz all drove in runs as part of a five-run 4th inning.
Zepeda went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the second straight game. She also scored a run in the game. Marx and Chacon each went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Lopez was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Ortiz finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs. Montoya finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Waddell picked up the win as she pitched three innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference play on Wednesday when they play a doubleheader against Dawson Community College as part of the TIG Invitational. The games will be played at Lincoln Park (Field #6) at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
