Aztecs Women’s Basketball holds off Scottsdale CC for 10th straight win

(Scottsdale, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (21-6, 17-4 in ACCAC) picked up its 10th straight victory on Wednesday after outlasting Scottsdale Community College (16-10, 12-9) in an ACCAC conference road matchup.

The No. 11 ranked Aztecs used an early fourth quarter run to retake the lead and hold the Artichokes scoreless for the final three minutes for their 71-64 win. This is the longest winning streak for the Aztecs since they went on an 11-game streak back in 2015-16.

The Artichokes hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 56-55 to close out the quarter. Scottsdale outscored Pima 28-15 in the third.

The Aztecs retook the lead in the opening minute after freshman Annalise Holthaus (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit a jumper. The Aztecs built that into an 8-0 run to take a 63-56 lead with 7:29 left. The Artichokes countered with an 8-2 run to cut Pima’s lead to 65-64 but the Artichokes would go scoreless the rest of the game.

The Aztecs scored the first seven points of the game and led 19-12 after the opening quarter. They matched their biggest lead of the game with a 40-28 advantage at halftime.

Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) led the way with a team-high 19 points as she went 8 for 13 shooting. She added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Freshman Rylei Waugh went 2 for 4 from beyond the arc and finished with 15 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Freshman Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS) was the other Aztecs player in double figures as she scored 14 points. She also posted eight rebounds and four steals. Lopez also went 4 for 4 from the foul line.

Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) provided extra offensive opportunities on the glass as she grabbed 10 offensive rebounds after finishing with 11 total. She also had eight points and two blocks.

The Aztecs will host their final regular season game on Saturday when they go up against South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
