PHOENIX – Sun Devil Women’s Golf won the Dual in the Desert by defeating Denver in Match Play on Sunday afternoon at Papago Golf Club.

No. 23 Arizona State took down No. 50 Denver in the one-day, match play style event hosted by the Pioneers at the home of Sun Devil Golf – Papago Golf Club. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye‘s team took care of business, winning four of the six matches en route to their second match play victory of the season. ASU now possesses victories over two Top-50 teams in matches despite only having played in two events with the format.

Calynne Rosholt was the first Sun Devil to secure a win, wrapping up her match on the 13th hole with an impressive 6&5 victory. Grace Summerhays followed shortly after with a win of her own, needing only 14 holes to clinch the victory. Patience Rhodes captured a win giving ASU the advantage in both Group 1 matches and a 3-0 lead overall. It was Beth Coulter’sclutch 18th hole that sealed the deal for Arizona State, as she took home the victory in her match on the final hole.

The NCAA Championship is decided via Match Play and the Maroon & Gold have received a glimpse of what would come should they make an end-of-the-season run having now played four different programs in match play (Texas, Ohio State, Pepperdine, Denver).

“There were a lot of positives from today,” Coach Farr-Kaye reflected. “Any time you can compete in match play and win as a team, it is important. I am pleased with the mentality the team played with. They are getting more comfortable and confident in Match Play.”

Darius Rucker Intercollegiate – March 4-6 (Hilton Head Island, SC)
For the third consecutive year, Sun Devil Women’s Golf will be featured in one of the top collegiate events of the season, the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. It will once again be aired live on GOLF Channel from Long Cove Club, with the nation’s top teams getting exposure on a national scale. Arizona State represented themselves extremely well on national television as a part of the only televised regular season women’s collegiate golf tournament on GOLF Channel. At an event featuring 16 of the Top-46 and 14 of the Top-32 teams in the latest Golfstat rankings, Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye‘s team finished in sixth. Four of the five teams that finished ahead of them were ranked in the Top-10.

Three Sun Devils finished in the Top-25 of the individual race, led by Ashley Menne. Menne had the best round of any Sun Devil throughout the three days, delivering a 69 (-2). She made a jump up the standings for the second consecutive day, eventually finishing in a tie for 13th. Not far behind was Paula Schulz-Hanssen, who continued her strong play by finishing tied for 16th. Beth Coulter was the third Sun Devil in the Top-25 in a field that boasted 23 of the Top-52 and 41 of the Top-100 golfers in the latest Golfstat rankings. This event ended up being a preview of the NCAA Championship last year, with the nation’s top ranked teams getting significant media coverage and attention.
