Lopez has six hits and seven RBIs as Softball splits first day at Great Western Shootout; go 3-2 at CSN Kickoff Classic

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (4-3) opened play in the Great Western Shootout on Friday at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex in Yuma, AZ.

The Aztecs scored 25 runs on the day as the offense ran roughshod in the first game of the day against the College of Southern Nevada. The bats struggled to put something together in the second game against No. 12 ranked Salt Lake Community College.
Freshman Alyssa Lopez (Sunnyside HS) finished the day going 6 for 6 with seven RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and two stolen bases.

Pima CC Aztecs 22, College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 14 (6 innings)

The Aztecs set the tone in the 1st inning with eight runs and secured the run-rule win in the 6th inning.
With two outs, freshman Bella Medina (Canyon del Oro HS) hit an RBI single to score freshman Stephany Montoya (Kofa HS), who led off the inning with a walk. Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) and Medina each stole home plate to secure the win.
Lopez went on a tear at the plate as she cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double in the 1st inning and scored two runs on freshman Alyssa Noriega’s (Pueblo HS) RBI single and later on freshman Marina Price’s (Rincon/University HS) RBI single. The Aztecs led 8-0 after the inning.
Lopez hit a two-run RBI double to make it 16-6 in the 3rd inning. She once again was brought in to score off of Price’s RBI hit. Lopez helped put a halt to the Coyotes rally as she hit another two-run RBI single to make it 19-13 in the 5th inning.
Lopez finished the game going 5 for 5 with seven RBIs and three runs scored in the lead-off spot. Price went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs while Medina was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Ortiz, sophomore Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) and freshman Monique Bustamante (Salpointe Catholic HS) each scored three runs. Salazar also had two RBIs.
Freshman Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) picked up the win (2-0) as she pitched four and one-third innings, giving up 13 runs (13 earned) on 14 hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

(12) Salt Lake CC Bruins 9, Pima CC Aztecs 3:
The Aztecs took an early lead with two runs in the 1st inning but the Bruins rallied in the bottom half of the 1st and took the lead for good.
Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run homer to center field, which brought in freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) to put Pima up 2-0.
Zepeda scored the third run for the Aztecs in the 6th inning after sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) drove her in with an RBI single.
Zepeda went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Zylinski-Wrobel was 1 for 2 with an RBI as the Aztecs totaled six hits for the game.
Freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) took the loss on the mound.

The Aztecs will close out play at the Great Western Shootout on Saturday when they go up against Snow College at 9:00 a.m. and close it out against the College of Southern Idaho at 11:00 a.m.

*(Jan. 26-27) College of Southern Nevada Kickoff Classic: The Aztecs went 3-2 and started off the season with an 8-6 upset victory over No. 12 Salt Lake Community College. They also picked up wins over Snow College (9-3) and the College of Southern Nevada 10-0 (6 innings). They lost to Trinidad State College 14-6 (5 innings) and Utah State University-Eastern 8-0 (6 innings).
