(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert women’s and men’s basketball teams finished out the 2023-24 regular season with comfortable wins over Pacific Union teams who were both winless on the season. The women won 92-41, while the men won 90-66 at Arizona Athletic Grounds.
The women finish 15-12, 13-7 in Cal Pac play and are the number four seed in the conference tournament. The men finish with the highest number of wins in program history, finishing the season 12-16 with a 8-12 mark in conference play, missing out on the playoffs by one game.
Women’s Basketball – Park Gilbert 92, Pacific Union 41
With five players in double figures, the Buccaneer women cruised to a 51-point win over the Pioneers.
The Buccaneer seniors were celebrated before the contest and then those seniors went out and celebrated on the floor as Faith Watkins (17 points), Jazmyne Jenkins (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Madison Chappell (11 points, 12 rebounds) each had a big night in their final home game as a Buccaneer. Both Jenkins and Chappell collected their seventh double-double of their careers.
Jayla Reliford had her second consecutive double digit assist night as she dished out 10 dimes.
The Bucs shot a gaudy 51 percent from the floor for the game and held the Pioneers to just 23 percent for the game and held them to just 13 second half points.
The women will not prepare for the postseason as they return to northern California for the California Pacific Conference Championships at UC Merced starting next Saturday, March 2 where they will open with the five seed Simpson, who they lost to twice this season.
Men’s Basketball – Park Gilbert 90, Pacific Union 66
The Buccaneer men finished its best season in its short history with a 24-point win over the Pioneers.
Led by a Caleb Ivy double-double, the Bucs never trailed in this contest and led by as many as 25 points in the contest.
Senior LC Ballard, the Bucs all-time leading scorer on the men’s side finished with 18 points. Evan Hoosier (12) and DJ Frye (10) also scored in the double figures. Ballard finishes his two-year career in Gilbert with 719 points in 56 games.
Aidan Moreno finished one point short of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.
The other senior, Kylan Shorts, tied for the team lead with Ivy with five assists and he added seven points. Shorts, is the only player to play all four years at Park in the programs short five-year history.
The Buccaneers finished with their highest win total with 12. The most wins in conference play (8) and its highest finish in conference play (7th).
