(Mesa, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s golf team opened the 2024 season on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mesa CC Invitational held at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course.
The Aztecs tied for fourth place in the final team standings with a two-day total of 588 (289-299). The Aztecs were in third place after the first round but Paradise Valley Community College outshot Pima by 4-strokes to also finish with 588 (293-295). South Mountain Community College took first place with a 551 (277-274) and Eastern Arizona College placed second with 567 (280-287). Pima was 4-strokes behind Mesa Community College for third place at 584 (294-290).
Freshman Caysen Wright was the top golfer in the individual standings as he tied for eighth place after shooting a 3-under par 141. He closed out the first round with a 6-under par 66 and finished with a 75 in Wednesday’s final round.
Sophomore Luis Lopez (Sahuarita HS) shot a 1-under par 71 in the final round and finished tied for 16th place with a 145 (74-71).
Freshman Colton Boone (Douglas HS) shot an even-par 72 in his first round and closed out the tournament with a 154 (72-82).
Freshmen Gabe Herbst and Ethan McWilliams (Canyon del Oro HS) each shot a 156. Herbst improved by 8-strokes as he shot a 2-over par 74 in the second round (82-74). McWilliams shot a 77 and a 79 for his rounds.
The Aztecs will play in the Paradise Valley CC Invitational on Feb. 25-26 at the Encanto Golf Course in Phoenix. Teams begin to tee off at 10:00 a.m.
