Aztecs Men’s Basketball uses 24-2 run to beat Glendale College for its 10th straight win

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team’s (24-3, 16-3 in ACCAC) winning streak has eclipsed double digits as it used a big run in the first half to fuel its win over Glendale Community College (12-15, 7-12) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 14 ranked Aztecs downed the Gauchos 117-88 for their 10th straight win and 17th game scoring in triple digits. The Aztecs came into the game leading the NJCAA with 105.8 points per game.

Up 39-35 with over five minutes left in the half, freshman Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) sparked the run with a four-point play that carried into a 24-2 run to close out the half. The Aztecs led 63-37 at the break. The Aztecs outscored Glendale 54-51 in the second half as they maintained their double-digit lead.

Sophomore Jaylen Alexander scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. He scored the first 10 of Pima’s 13 points at the beginning of the game, establishing his presence in the paint. He was 7 for 13 from the field and 8 for 11 from the free throw line. He grabbed five rebounds and had two steals and one block.

Sophomore Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS) was 6 for 11 from the floor and 4 for 8 from downtown as he finished with 18 points.

Gonzales was 4 for 8 from the field and posted 16 points to go with five assists and three rebounds. Freshman Gabe Oldham had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Freshmen Wes Ball (Marana HS) and Kota Benson (Mesa HS) each scored 10 points off the bench. Ball had seven rebounds and three assists while Benson added six assists.

The Aztecs will play at Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
