Aztecs Baseball hold California Miramar University to three hits in doubleheader sweep

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (10-2) won its eighth straight game on Tuesday as it picked up a sweep against California Miramar University at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.
The Aztecs used eight pitchers on the day as they combined for 14 innings, giving up one run (none earned) on three hits with 15 strikeouts and four walks. Sophomores Diego Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) and Sean Farney (Millennium HS) picked up the wins.

Game 1: Pima Aztecs 5, Cal Miramar Fighting Falcons 1

W – Alvarez (1-0)

The Aztecs took the lead in the 3rd inning when freshman Leon Cereceres hit an RBI single to drive in sophomore Elijah Reeves (Marana HS) and later scored on an error to put Pima up 2-0.

The Aztecs tacked on three more runs in the 6th inning. Sophomore Caleb Herd (Cienega HS) drew a bases loaded walk to score sophomore Jontae Hennesy (Horizon HS). Reeves followed with a sacrifice-fly RBI to score freshman Chase Cummings. Cereceres made it 5-0 with his RBI single that brought in sophomore Antonio Avila.
Cereceres finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Reeves went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run while Avila was 1 for 3 with a run. Herd had an RBI and two walks and sophomore Brant Kragel was 1 for 1 with two walks.

Alvarez picked up the win as he pitched four innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Game 2: Pima Aztecs 10, California Miramar Fighting Falcons 0 (7 innings)

W – Farney (1-1). 2B: Ganter. 3B: Avila, Castro. SB: Avila 2, Senior.

The Aztecs struck in the 1st inning and added to their lead with six runs in the 3rdand four runs in the 4th inning. The pitching staff did the rest holding the Fighting Falcons scoreless with just two hits for the game.

Avila hit a lead-off single and scored on Hennesy’s RBI single in the 1st inning.

The Aztecs scored all six of their runs in the 3rd with two outs. Sophomore Dom Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a two-run RBI single to score sophomore Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro HS) and freshman Nolan Ganter (Pinnacle HS) to make it 4-0. Felix scored a run to make it 6-0 after sophomore Sterling Albrand (Millennium HS) drove an RBI single. Avila capped off the inning with an RBI triple to plate Albrand.

The Aztecs scored three runs in the 4th inning; all with no outs. Sophomore Ruben Castro (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a lead-off triple and was driven in by Hennesy. Ganter hit a two-run RBI double to score Hennesy and Madsen to put the run-rule in effect.
Avila finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and two steals. Ganter went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a run and walk. Felix was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Hennesy closed out the game, going 1 for 1 with two RBIs, two runs and two walks. Madsen finished 1 for 3 with two runs and a walk while Albrand was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
Farney got the win after he pitched two innings, giving up one hit with five strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Saturday when they host Yavapai College in their ACCAC conference opener. First game starts at noon.
