Arias and Cummings combine to score 10 runs as Baseball outscores Luna CC 26-1 in sweep

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (8-2) returned to the West Campus Aztec Field to continue its non-conference schedule as it played a doubleheader against Luna Community College (NM).
The Aztecs outscored the Roughriders 26-1 on the day. Sophomore Nick Arias (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day 4 for 7 with six runs scored, two RBIs, two doubles and two stolen bases. Freshman Chase Cummings finished with five hits on the day (5 for 8) with four runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore Garrett Hicks (Verrado HS) and freshman Auggie Richie (Sabino HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 15, Luna CC Roughriders 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs scored in every inning to take control.
Cummings hit a two-run RBI double while sophomores David Shackelford, Brant Kragel and Caleb Herd (Cienega HS) all hit RBI singles in a six-run 1st inning.
Sophomore Ruben Castro (Tucson Magnet HS) drove in the two runs in the 2nd inning scoring Arias and Shackelford to make it 8-0.
The Aztecs tacked on three runs in the 3rd inning with Arias’ RBI double, which was followed by Shackelford’s two-run RBI double. Herd, sophomore Antonio Avila and Arias scored runs in the inning to put the score at 11-0.
The Aztecs drove in another four runs in the 4th inning. Sophomore Jontae Hennesy (Horizon HS) scored on an error. Avila drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Cummings. Sophomore Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro HS) hit an RBI single, and Kragel hit a sacrifice-fly RBI.
Arias closed out the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored while Shackelford went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs. Herd finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs and Castro went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Cummings was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Kragel finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Avila drew three walks, scored two runs, and an RBI.
Hicks picked up the win after he pitched three innings, giving up one hit with seven strikeouts and two walks on 55 pitches.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Luna CC Roughriders 1 (8 innings)

The offense continued their hot streak as they scored in four straight innings and earned the run rule win in the 8th inning.

Cummings hit a lead-off triple and was brought in by freshman Collin Senior’s (Horizon HS) walk-off RBI single to end the game.
Freshman Leon Cereceres hit a two-run RBI double in the 2nd inning and drove in two more with an RBI single in the 3rd inning. He finished 4 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Kragel drove in another three runs as he had an RBI single in the 1st inning and had a two-run RBI single in the 2nd inning to make it 5-0. He went 3 for 5 with three RBIs.
Cummings had four hits in the game, which included a double and a triple as he scored runs in the 4th and 8th innings. He went 4 for 5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
Arias had an RBI single in the 3rd inning and finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Madsen and Senior each had an RBI and two runs scored for the game.
Richie got the win on the mound as he pitched three innings, giving up two hits with three strikeouts on 35 pitches.

The Aztecs will host Luna Community College for another doubleheader on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field. The first game starts at 11:00 a.m.
