(Tempe, AZ) Sun Devil Men’s Basketball fell short in overtime against Washington after erasing a 25-point deficit in the second half.
A season-high 51 points in the second half highlighted a spirited comeback effort, as Arizona State (13-14, 7-9) fought hard to force overtime. The Sun Devils trailed the Huskies for a majority of the game and entered the locker room trailing by 21, but this did not stop them from chipping away at the lead.
Coach Hurley used a substitution of the second unit early in the second half as a spark, leading to ASU outscoring the Huskies 51-30 in the second half. Frankie Collins led the way as he took over offensively in the second half, scoring 19 of his 21 points in the second half.
Despite the loss in overtime against Washington, Frankie Collins became the leader in steals in a season of Sun Devils Men’s Basketball history with 77 on the year.
FIRST HALF
Shawn Phillips opens the gate by knocking down a free throw to give the Sun Devils their first points of the game, leading 1-0. Following the free throw, Shawn Phillips manages to back down his defender into a sky hook to complete the basket, tying it at 3-3. The Sun Devils trail the Huskies 7-3 with 15:57 remaining in the first half.
Adam Miller finds Jamiya Neal in transition for a contested layup at the rim to cut the Sun Devils deficit to 9-7 with 14:11 remaining. After a 8-0 run concluded by the Huskies, Jose Perez is able to bank in a contested shot to end the Huskies run, trailing 17-9 with 14:00 remaining. The Sun Devils trail 20-12 with 11:20 remaining, with Jose Perez heading to the line after the second media timeout.
Bryant Selebangue is able to catch the tipped pass for an easy two handed dunk to cut the deficit to 24-17. The Huskies extend the lead to 26-17 over the Sun Devils with 7:53 remaining in the first half.
Frankie Collins finds Jamiya Neal behind the arc in transition to cash in a three, closing their deficit to 27-20. Frankie Collins knocks down a jumper from the top of the paint, the Sun Devils trail 24-29 with 4:45 remaining in the first half. ASU trails Washington 31-24 heading into the final media timeout with 3:44 remaining in the half.
The Huskies managed to complete a 16-0 run to end the first half, leaving the Sun Devils trailing 45-24 at the end of the first half.
SECOND HALF
Bryant Selebangue opens up the second half with a completed and-1 for the Sun Devils, leaving the Sun Devils trailing 49-27. ASU heads into the first media timeout of the second half, trailing 49-32 with 15:38 remaining in regulation.
Braelon Green finds a wide open Kamari Lands in the corner to hit the corner three. The Sun Devils close the margin to 51-38 with 13:10 remaining in regulation.
After a technical foul was assessed to the Huskies head coach, Adam Miller was able to knock down both free throws. The Sun Devils trail 56-42 with 11:00 remaining in the second half. Frankie Collins gets fancy with an up and under left handed layup after a steal, putting the Sun Devils at a 10 point deficit, trailing 59-49 with 8:55 remaining. Frankie Collins drains a three from deep to cut the Huskies lead under 10. ASU trails Washington 61-54 with 6:44 remaining in regulation.
Frankie Collins distributes to Adam Miller who knocks down his second three ball, leaving the Sun Devils trailing 65-57 at the 5:00 minute mark. Frankie Collins squeezes through to grab an offensive rebound and puts it back up to cut the Huskies lead to 65-59 with 3:50 remaining in regulation.
Kamari Lands knocks down both free throws heading into the bonus, closing the Sun Devils deficit to 4, trailing 67-63 with 2:44 remaining in regulation. Frankie Collins splashes a contested fading three in the corner to cut the Huskies lead to 70-68 with 1:10 remaining in regulation. Frankie Collin manages to hit another deep contested three, closing the Huskies lead to 73-71 with 33.8 seconds left in regulation. Frankie hits 2 for 3 free throws to make it a one point game with 16 seconds remaining. The Sun Devils trail 74-73 to the Huskies. Frankie Collins manages to get to the hoop to tie the game at 75 a piece. The Sun Devils are tied with the Huskies 75-75 at the end of regulation.
OVERTIME
Jose Perez’ floater from the paint gives the Sun Devils their first points in overtime. ASU leads 79-76 with 3:13 remaining in overtime. Jamiya Neal reclaims the Sun Devils lead with a two handed dunk, now leading 81-80 with 1:50 left in overtime. The Sun Devils are all tied up with the Huskies at 82-82 with 1:00 remaining in overtime.
The Sun Devils fall short 84-82 to the Huskies at the end of the final seconds of overtime.
