(Angwin, CA)  The Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team won handily against Pacific Union College tonight 94-73. But this was not the story of the night. Kayla Schoreder set two records tonight, becoming the first Buccaneer (man or woman) to reach 1000 points for her career. She also set a career high in points, scoring 31. Schroeder needed 30 points entering the game to reach the 1000 point mark.

The Buccaneers move to 9-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play which is their best record in conference play, besting the 6-3 mark they had in the covid shortened season of 2021-22.

The game started with PUC making its opening three-point shot and a 7-4 lead which prompted Bucs head coach Ben York to call a time out. Out of the time out, the Bucs proceeded to go on a 14-0 run to break the game open and never looked back.

Park led 29-15 at the end of the first frame and Schroeder outscored Pacific Union by herself in the first quarter scoring 17 points. She was perfect from the floor, going 7-7 and 3-3 from three point range.

In the second quarter Schroeder sat most of the way and only had one attempt which she made to stay perfect with 19 points at the half. The Bucs continued to step on the gas and increased its lead to 23 at the half 52-29.

The Bucs continued to add on in the third as they increased their lead to 31, 76-45. Schroeder missed her first shot of the game but tacked on seven more points in the quarter to get to 26 putting her just four points away from the 1000 point mark.

The two questions entering the fourth quarter were would the Buccaneers get to 100 points for the second time this season and would Schroeder get to 1000 points. The Bucs started with their bench players and Schroeder on the floor in the final quarter. The Schroeder question was answered first as she scored five points in the quarter and got to the record with an and one layup at the 2:13 mark to get the 1000-point mark. The free throw that followed also set her new career scoring high as she broke her previous record of 30 set against Goshen last month when she became the all-time leading scorer in Bucs history. The 100-point question went unanswered as Pacific Union outscored the Bucs 28-18 in the final quarter to leave Park Gilbert six points short of 100.

Schroder now has 1001 points for her career and accomplished the feat in 66 games (15.16 avg.). She is averaging almost 20 points per game this season. She also got it done on the defensive end with six steals and six rebounds.

Schroeder was not the only player to set a career high for points, Kiley Bush came in and almost posted a double-double in just 14 minutes, scoring a career-high 10 points and pulling down a career-high nine rebounds. Larken Hoar also set career-highs with seven points and five rebounds.

Ten Buccaneers saw the floor tonight and all 10 were able to put points on the board.

The Buccaneers now travel to Vallejo, Calif. to take on Cal Maritime on Saturday, January 20 at 3 p.m. Arizona time.
