(Angwin, CA) The Park University Gilbert men’s basketball team produced one of its best conference performances ever in a 99-58 victory over Pacific Union Thursday evening. With the win, the Buccaneers tie the school record for most wins in a season set in the first year of the program with eight. The Bucs also set a record for conference wins with four. Park now stands at 8-11 overall and 4-5 in Cal Pac play.
Park Gilbert started the game on an 11-4 run and looked solid early, then added another 13-4 run to get the lead to double digits and the Pioneers were never able to get the score any closer. The Bucs would get the lead as large as 25 points before settling on a 22-point half time advantage.
The second half was more of the same as Park would extend the margin to as large as 45 points but a few baskets in garbage time at the end of the game cut the final margin to 41.
Park Gilbert set or surpassed a number of records tonight. The margin of victory is the largest in conference history for the Buccaneers and the 99 points are the most scored in a conference game. In addition, the Bucs set a school record for shooting percentage, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor breaking the previous record of 61.5 percent set last season against Northwest Indian College. The Buccos also tied the record for most field goals made in a game with 40 set against Northwest Indian College.
The 50 points in the first half is a conference record for a half and was just 8 points short of the school record set against Cal Miramar in 2019. The 22 assists dished out by the Bucs tied the school record set twice against Embry Riddle in the 2021-2022 season.
DJ Frye was perfect from the field going 7-7 which included 1-1 from three-point range and 1-1 from the free throw line for 16 points. The most impressive stat of the night is Frye put up these numbers in just 14 minutes of playing time on the floor. Terrance Ward added 13 points and tied the school record for assists with eight set by Jake Ellis in November of 2019.
Aiden Moreno posted his second double-double of the season and of his career with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Hunter Robbins set a career high with 10 points, while Kylan Shorts set a career high with seven assists to go along with seven points.
The Bucs look for their first 2-0 road trip in conference history when they travel to Vallejo, Calif., to take on a twp-win Cal Maritime squad on Saturday, January 20 at 5 p.m. Arizona time. Park Gilbert has never beaten Cal Maritime in its three previous meetings.
