Acosta and Buffill-Gutierrez come up clutch in the second half as Women’s Basketball outduels South Plains College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (10-3) bounced back in a big way on Saturday to close out the Aztec Holiday Classic.

The No. 14 ranked Aztecs held on to beat the Texans 64-61 closing out the invitational with a 2-1 record.

With the game tied at 60-60 with 1:19 left, freshman Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino HS) hit a pair of free throws to give Pima the lead back. Up 62-61, freshman Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS) came up with a crucial steal, and freshman Rylei Waugh was fouled. Waugh hit both of her free throw attempts with 20.9 seconds left.

The Texans collected a steal and called timeout with 9.3 seconds on the clock to set up a final possession. Sahir Alizada missed a three-pointer at the top of the arc and the game ended with a mad scramble for the ball.

The score was tied at 30-30 at halftime but the Aztecs turned to sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) in the third quarter. She scored the first nine Pima points and had 13 for the quarter as Pima led 47-41. She also came up big at the foul line in the four quarter. Up 54-52, she hit a pair to make it a four-point lead. The Texans cut Pima’s advantage to one-point at 56-55 but Acosta against hit another two foul shots to make it 58-55 with 3:15left.

Acosta scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half as she went 8 for 13 shooting and 6 for 9 from the free throw line. She completed her double-double with 10 rebounds.

Buffill-Gutierrez finished with 13 points off the bench as she went 3 for 3 from the field and 6 for 8 from the free throw line. She also added three assists and two rebounds.

Waugh had 11 points and five assists while freshman Rori Hoffmeyer added nine points and six rebounds.

The Aztecs return to ACCAC conference competition on Wednesday when they play at Scottsdale Community College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
