Dominique Acosta posts second straight double-double as Aztecs Women’s Basketball overpowers South Mountain

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (8-2, 5-1 in ACCAC) dominated in its match against South Mountain Community College (0-8, 0-5) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 14 ranked Aztecs controlled three quarters to beat the Cougars 80-34.

The Aztecs led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and started the second quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 34-8 advantage. The Aztecs led 46-16 at halftime.

The Aztecs put together a 16-2 run and outscored the Cougars 20-3 in the third quarter.

Freshman Rylei Waugh finished with a game-high 17 points, along with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) posted her second straight double-double as she closed out the game with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Acosta had 18 points and 14 rebounds in Pima’s win on Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

The Aztecs played 15 players, and everyone scored points in the game. The bench finished with 44 points. Sophomore Jordan Joe, and freshmen Katie Burns (Catalina Foothills HS) and Sage Begay (Flagstaff HS) each had six points.

Freshmen Annalise Holthaus (Ironwood Ridge HS) and Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS) each grabbed seven rebounds. The Aztecs finished with 26 offensive rebounds.

The Aztecs will be on holiday break and get back to play for the Aztec Holiday Classic from Dec. 28-30 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. The Aztecs will face off against Bismarck State College (ND) on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
