Aztecs Women’s has fast start to overwhelm Central Arizona College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (6-1, 3-0 in ACCAC) took advantage of Central Arizona College’s slow start and picked up the win on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 14 ranked (Division II) Aztecs defeated the Vaqueras (Division I) 76-60 after outscoring them 14-1 in the first quarter and taking a 33-14 lead at the break.

The Vaqueras missed their first 18 shots of the game and scored their first field goal at the 8:11 mark in the second quarter.

The Aztecs started the third quarter on a 15-6 run in the first four minutes to make it 48-20. The Aztecs led 61-34.

The Vaqueras started off the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run but the Aztecs held on to their double-digit lead to close it out.

Sophomore Dominque Acosta (Nogales HS) scored a team-high 19 points after she went 9 for 10 from the field. She also grabbed three rebounds.

Freshman Rylei Waugh scored 18 points to go along with six rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Sophomore Jordan Joe went 7 for 10 from the field and scored 14 points off the bench.

Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. She was 4 for 5 from the field.

Freshman Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS) was dominant under the glass as she finished with 17 rebounds (seven offensive) to go along with four points and three assists. The Aztecs out-rebounded the Vaqueras 63-36 for the game.

The Aztecs will play at rival and No. 4 ranked Mesa Community College on Saturday. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
