Aztecs Men’s Basketball uses 17-0 run to take down Glendale College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (6-0, 2-0 in ACCAC) continued its hot start to the season as it dominated the second half against Glendale Community College (3-4, 0-2).

The Aztecs defeated the Gauchos 115-71 scoring in triple figures for the sixth straight contest.

Down 34-32 with under five minutes left in the first half, the Aztecs went on a 12-0 run to close out the half and take a 44-34 lead at the break. They continued the run by scoring the first five points of the second half (17-0 run total) to take a 49-34 advantage; their biggest lead at that point. Up 93-65 with 6:21 left, the Aztecs helped seal the game with a 16-1 run to make it 109-66. Pima outscored Glendale 71-37 in the second half.

The teams went back and fourth for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Aztecs went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-19 lead but the Gauchos countered with a 15-7 run to take the lead back.

Freshman Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) provided a spark in the second half as he went 4 for 6 from downtown. He finished the game with 23 points going 7 for 11 from the field and 5 for 8 from three-point range. He also added four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Gabe Oldham closed it out with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals.

Sophomore Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half while freshman Moses Demalek (Paradise Valley HS) scored all 14 of his points in the first half.

Freshman Kota Benson (Mesa HS) went 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and finished with 12 points off the bench. Sophomore Jaylen Alexander contributed with 10 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore Zach Williamson had seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Aztecs step away from ACCAC conference play on Saturday as they host the GCU Club Team at the West Campus Aztec Gym. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
