Bucs Sweep Pacific Union College 3-0

(Mesa, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert volleyball team got back on the winning track winning in straight sets over Pacific Union College 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) at Legacy Sports Complex. The match was played on the Athletes Unlimited court in Fieldhouse C. Athletes Unlimited is a professional women’s volleyball organization who will be playing matches throughout the month of October at Legacy. The Buccaneers match was the first match to be played on the AU floor this fall.

With the win today, Park Gilbert ups its record to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Pacific Union falls to 4-9 overall, 2-7 in California Pacific Conference action. The Buccaneers now own a 7-0 lead in the all-time series with the Pioneers.

Park started slow in all three sets. In set one, the Bucs fell behind 4-0 before rallying to tie the match at five-all. Then it became a see-saw battle with each team holding the lead at some point u to 15-15. A Makayla Simmons ace gave the Bucs the lead for good as they would go on a 10-3 run to end the set and take a 1-0 lead. Park posted 14 kills and hit .231 for the frame.

Set two started even worse for the Buccos as they fell behind 7-0. Park Gilbert slowly crawled its way back into the match eventually knotting the score at 15-all after an 8-2 run. Again, this is where the Buccaneers made their move and went on a 10-3 run to close out the set and win 25-18.

The third and final frame saw the Bucs fall behind once more, this time it was a 5-1 deficit to start the set. This time the Bucs were able to work their way back to all square at 10-10. But the Pioneers did not fold in this set. The battle was on all the way to 22-all before three consecutive points went the Bucs way with a Railey Druxman ace closing things out.

Mallory Turner led the way with 11 kills for back-to-back double digit kills matches. Jade Laikona and Druxman added seven putaways. Laikona had no errors. Maggie Scranton added six kills.

Daniella Miranda-Johnson (20) and Chloe Thomas (12) had 32 of the Bucs 36 helpers and Simmons led the team with 12 digs and tied for the lead with three aces along with Druxman.

The Bucs hit .280 as a team with 39 kills and only nine attack errors. The Bucs also doubled the Pioneers in the ace department (8 to 4).

The Buccaneers complete its three-match homestand with UC Merced tomorrow evening with a 6 p.m. start time at Legacy Sports Park in Fieldhouse C. The match can be seen on the Buccaneer Sports Network via our streaming platform WTSMTV.
