Sun Devil Men’s Basketball Reveals Non-Conference Schedule

(Tempe, AZ)  Sun Devil Men’s Basketball officially revealed the non-conference portion of their schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

Head Coach Bobby Hurley and his staff have once again constructed an extremely challenging slate that sees Arizona State hosting winning programs and taking on strong competition away from home. The 12-game schedule features six contests away from home and six at Desert Financial Arena. Times and television broadcast details will be revealed at a later date. Here is a full breakdown of the 2023 Sun Devil Men’s Basketball non-conference games.

November 8 – Mississippi State (Neutral site – Chicago; Barstool Sports Invitational)
November 11 – vs. Texas Southern (Home Opener)
November 16 – vs. UMass Lowell
November 23 – BYU (Neutral site – Las Vegas; Vegas Showdown)
November 24 – NC State/Vanderbilt (Neutral site – Las Vegas; Vegas Showdown)
November 29 – vs. Sam Houston State
December 3 – vs. San Francisco
December 6 – vs. SMU
December 9 – at San Diego
December 16 – TCU (Neutral site – Dallas; Coast-to-Coast Challenge)
December 20 – Northwestern (Neutral site – Phoenix; Jerry Colangelo’s Hall of Fame Series Phoenix)

Mississippi State – Nov. 8 (Chicago, IL – Barstool Sports Invitational)
Sun Devil Men’s Basketball will open the 2023-24 season with Mississippi State at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on November 8 at 7:00 PM AZT as part of the 2023 Barstool Sports Invitational. The day is headlined by Arizona State taking on the Bulldogs in the second of two high-level matchups, with the event also featuring a contest between Florida Atlantic and Loyola Chicago earlier in the evening. vs. Texas Southern – Nov. 11 (Tempe – Desert Financial Arena)
Arizona State will open their home schedule on Nov. 11 with a rematch against Texas Southern. This will be the first opportunity for Sun Devil fans to check out their team at Desert Financial Arena. The two sides have matched up in Tempe twice during the Hurley era, both victories by ASU. The Sun Devils last defeated Texas Southern, 98-81, at home in 2019.

vs. UMass Lowell – Nov. 16 (Tempe – Desert Financial Arena)
The Maroon and Gold play in their second consecutive home game on Nov. 16, hosting UMass Lowell in the third game of the year. This will be the first meeting between the two programs. The Riverhawks are one of three teams ASU will host at Desert Financial Arena that won 20+ games in 2022-23. UMass Lowell is coming off of season in which they won a school-record 26 games and reached the America East Conference Championship Game.

BYU – Nov. 23 (Las Vegas, NV – Vegas Showdown)
Sun Devil Men’s Basketball will participate in the 2023 Vegas Showdown taking place Nov. 23-24 at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Arizona State is joined by BYU, NC State, and Vanderbilt in the four-team event. Two semifinal contests will be held on Thursday, Nov. 23 leading to the consolation (losing teams) and championship games (winning teams) on Friday, Nov. 24. The Sun Devils will take on BYU on Thursday, Nov. 23 at 9 PM AZT in the second of the two Vegas Showdown semifinals. Vanderbilt and NC State will play in the first matchup of the day, with both games broadcasted on ESPN2.

NC State/Vanderbilt – Nov. 24 (Las Vegas, NV – Vegas Showdown)
Arizona State will face either NC State or Vanderbilt in the consolation or championship game of the Vegas Showdown on Nov. 24. The two games are scheduled for 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM and will air on ESPN2. Tickets for each day of the Vegas Showdown can be purchased online at the following link.

vs. Sam Houston State – Nov. 29 (Tempe – Desert Financial Arena)
The Sun Devils return home on Nov. 29 for a three-game homestand after a Thanksgiving trip to Las Vegas. The first matchup is with Sam Houston State on Nov. 29 as the two sides meet for the first time since 1996. ASU defeated Sam Houston State 85-81 in the only previous meeting. The Bearkats are one of three teams ASU will host at Desert Financial Arena that won 20+ games in 2022-23. They are coming off a season in which they won 26 games and reached the second round of the NIT.

vs. San Francisco – Dec. 3 (Tempe – Desert Financial Arena)
Arizona State hosts a familiar foe on Dec. 3 as San Francisco returns the trip to Tempe. The all-time series is tied at six wins each between the two sides. The Sun Devils defeated San Francisco 75-57 at home during the 2017-18 season. The Dons are one of three teams ASU will host at Desert Financial Arena that won 20+ games in 2022-23.

vs. SMU – Dec. 6 (Tempe – Desert Financial Arena)
The Sun Devils host SMU on Dec. 6 in the second half of a home-and-home agreement, wrapping up their longest homestand in the non-conference. Arizona State has won all five previous meetings with SMU, including picking up a win in Dallas last season.

at San Diego – Dec. 9 (San Diego, CA)
Following a 91-67 victory at home last year, Arizona State returns the trip to San Diego for a matchup on Dec. 9. The Sun Devils have won each of the three previous meetings with the Toreros. The contest represents the only true road game for the Maroon and Gold in the non-conference.

TCU  – Dec. 16 (Dallas, TX – Coast-to-Coast Challenge)
Sun Devil Men’s Basketball will match up with TCU at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth on December 16 as part of the 2023 US LBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge. The day is headlined by Arizona State taking on the Horned Frogs as a part of a triple-header, with the event also featuring a contest between Texas Tech and Vanderbilt earlier in the evening.  Details on the television broadcast will be available at a later date. Northwestern – Dec. 20 (Phoenix, AZ – Jerry Colangelo’s Hall of Fame Series)
Sun Devil Men’s Basketball rounds out the non-conference portion of their schedule by taking on Northwestern at the Footprint Center in Phoenix on December 20 as part of Jerry Colangelo’s Hall of Fame Series Phoenix. Position Sports – in association with the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame – announced the complete field today for the 2023 Hall of Fame Series, which includes premiere matchups in Phoenix at the Footprint Center on December 20. Arizona State is part of a four-game lineup down the road at the home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, facing off with fellow 2023 NCAA Tournament participant Northwestern in the evening session.

The event will feature both the Arizona State and Arizona men’s and women’s basketball teams, marking the first time all four teams have played in the same location on the same day. Details on exact game time and television broadcast will be available at a later date.
