(Prescott. AZ) For the first time in Park University Gilbert women’s soccer history, it played the No. 1 team in the country. Not only is Spring Arbor University the top team in the land, it’s the defending national champions. The Buccaneers showed tremendous effort and competitiveness but came up short 3-0 in a lightning delayed neutral site game played at Embry Riddle.
The Cougars (1-0) held the Buccaneers (1-1) to only one shot on goal all night, but the Bucs still managed to put on enough pressure to garner three corner kicks. SAU peppered Park Gilbert goalkeeper Catherine Corlett with 20 shots (11 on goal) and she made eight saves.
The game was halted with 44 seconds left in the first half by lightning in the area and the game was delayed for over an hour. Prior to the delay, SAU scored two goals two minutes and 13 second apart as Lauren Marshall scored her first two goals of the season for the Cougars.
After returning from the delay, Park got its only shot on goal seven minutes into the second half on an attempt from Leigha Ritchie.
The final tally for Spring Arbor was an own goal with 16 minutes to go.
The Buccaneers now head to Oregon to face off with Warner Pacific University on Thursday, August 24 at 5 p.m. and George Fox University on Saturday, August 26 at 2 p.m.
