Washington, Ewen & Benard Punch Tickets to World Championships

(Eugene, OR)  Arizona State will be well represented at this year’s World Championships after four huge performances at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, by Turner WashingtonJustin Robinson, Maggie Ewen, and Chris Benard. Washington, Ewen and Benard each finished top-3 in their respective events, with Ewen claiming gold in the women’s shot – the second USA gold medal of her career. Washington was the runner-up in the men’s shot, and Benard took bronze in the triple jump. Robinson finished fourth in the men’s 400m (44.47) to earn a spot in the men’s 4×400 and mixed relay pools. The World Athletics World Championships in Budapest run August 19-27. Final Team USA selections are due August 7 and the full team will be announced around then.

Jeremiah Curry finished 13th in the 200m semifinals in 20.43; John Reniewicki didn’t run the 1500m he qualified for, but he took 12th in the 5K in 13:38.19; and Trevin Moyer was present for the U20 Championships but was disqualified in his 400m race.

Turner Washington continues to do Turner Washington, Ewen remains one of the best women’s throwers on the planet, Benard’s professional career has shown no signs of slowing, and there’s no clear ceiling for Robinson. Washington threw 65.60m/ 215-3 in round four of the discus to take silver in the first USATF Outdoor Championship discus meet of his career, while Ewen, who has now competed in six USA Championships, won the women’s shot put with a 19.92m/65-4.25 heave to earn her second career USA Championships gold medal. Benard lept 16.68m/54-8.75 in the opening round and used that mark to cruise to third overall. Benard, competing in his seventh USA Championship meet, finished third in the 2022 USA Outdoor Championships. This will mark his fourth trip to the World Championships.

2023 400m indoor champion Justin Robinson’s 44.47 was .06 behind adidas’ Quincy Hall (44.41) and was a .04 lifetime personal record. Robinson previously featured in the 2018 and 2019 USA U20 Championships. In 2018 he finished fourth in the 400m and helped the 4×400 relay to a silver medal finish at the U20 World Championships in Finland. The following season he swept the 400m and went on to claim gold in both the 400m (45.04) and the 4×400 relay at the U20 Pan American Games.

Washington came in second to Sam Mattis (65.93m/ 216-3) of NY Athletic Club and was ahead of Tracksmith’s Brian Williams 63.36m/207-10. Ewen notably beat out recent Ohio State graduate and 2020 Olympian Adelaide Aquilla (19.02m/62-5) and 2023 NCAA weight throw national champion Jalani Davis (18.62m/61-1.25). Benard was edged out by adidas’ Donald Scott (17.22m/56-6) and NYAC’s Will Claye (16.98m/55-8.50). 400m indoor champion Justin Robinson’s 44.47 was .06 behind adidas’ Quincy Hall (44.41) and was a .04 lifetime personal record,
