(San Jose, CA)  No. 16 Sun Devil Water Polo (11-13) closed out the season on a high note, and locked up 5th place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after a, 13-10, overtime win over No. 15 Indiana (17-14) this morning.

After tallying a goal in every game this season, it was only fitting for freshman attacker Juliette Dhalluin to find the back of the net with a second on the clock to send the game to OT, and two quick goals followed in that first overtime period which iced the game and secured the Sun Devils’ 9th win over the Hoosiers in the last 10 meetings.

“I am so proud of the girls, this was pure heart and teamwork,” noted Head Coach Petra Pardi after seven different scorers found the back of the net for the Sun Devils.

Itzahiana Baca got the final start of her Sun Devil Career recording 11 saves, and got some help from her offense, as the team drew 12 exclusions and managed to score on six of those man-up attempts, including on three of their first four. Defensively, ASU held IU to two power play goals on nine opportunities.

Offensively, Luca Petovary led the charge and had a hat trick before halftime, which put her over the 50 goal mark for the first time in her career. Dhalluin extended her scoring streak with a goal in the third quarter– and three on the day– which marked a goal in every game this season for the freshman and put her at 70 on the season.

How it Happened:

IU was on the board first, but a man-up possession for the Sun Devils saw Luca Petovary tie the game up at 1-1. The Hoosiers again scored a goal, and on the next Sun Devil possession a drawn exclusion again put ASU a man-up, but this time a 6-on-5 goal from Olivia Traxler tied it back up at 2. With 45 seconds on the clock, Sophie Shorter-Robinson’sbackhanded shot beat the Hoosiers’ goalie and put ASU up 3-2 after one.

Dhalluin won the sprint to start ASU on offense in the second quarter, and a gritty goal from Alba Olivé Martí doubled the Sun Devil lead. ASU again scored on the man-up attempt with Petovary’s second goal of the day for a 5-2 lead. IU’s first goal of the second quarter came with under two minutes remaining and cut the lead to 5-3. Dhalluin drew a penalty with 44 seconds on the clock, and Petovary nailed the goal for her third of the game to put ASU up 6-3. Frangieh was called for an exclusion in the final 30 seconds which prompted an IU timeout, but the defense stood strong. Doherty was called for a penalty with one second on the clock, and IU converted to cut the lead to two at the half.

Dhalluin extended her scoring streak to 24 games with a goal early in the third quarter on another man-up opportunity to put ASU up 7-4. After Dhalluin’s goal the two teams traded shots, but did not get on the board again until IU’s goal with 1:20 remaining to pull IU back within two. With 11 seconds left in the quarter, Olivé Martí was excluded and IU’s first PPG brought them within one.

Tina got on the board against her former squad to add to the cushion, but an immediate answer from IU kept the goal differential at one. Olivia Traxler was excluded, and a 6-on-5 goal from the Hoosiers tied the game up at 8. After back-to-back offensives, IU ended up with the ball and took the lead with 2:45 remaining which prompted an ASU timeout. ASU had the ball with one minute remaining and Van Zonneveld drew an exclusion, but the ASU shot was blocked and IU had the ball with 16 seconds. Hoosiers missed their shot and another ASU timeout gave the Sun Devils a final shot to send the game into overtime. Another exclusion gave ASU a 6-on-5 attempt and Dhalluin converted to send ASU to the second overtime game in as many days.

After controlling the ball after winning the opening sprint, Van Zonneveld scored early on the in OT, and a minute later Petovary drew a penalty and converted on the shot to put ASU up by two.

In OT2, IU won their first sprint of the game, and scored with 2:37 on the clock to pull back within one. IU’s goalie was excluded, and ASU saw seconds of a 6-on-4 and Dhalluin’s third goal went through the field players to get ASU back up by two and lock the game.
