Tsosie-Hood tosses shutout, Gomez and Chacon lead offense as Softball splits at Glendale to close regular season

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (35-21, 31-17 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Saturday at Glendale Community College (13-43, 11-37).

The Aztecs split with the Gauchos and were led on offense by sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS), who finished the day 5 for 9 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) went 4 for 8 with five RBIs and a run scored.

The Aztecs will be the No. 3 seed for the NJCAA Region I, Division II Tournament, which is Friday and Saturday, May 12-13. All games for the double elimination tournament will be held at No. 1 seed Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 6, Glendale CC Gauchos 0

Freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood pitched a complete-game shutout as she gave up three hits with two strikeouts and two walks on 86 pitches.
Chacon put the Aztecs on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning as she hit a two-run RBI single, driving in Tsosie-Hood and sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS).

Freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) added to Pima’s lead with a sacrifice-fly RBI to score sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) in the 3rd inning to make it 3-0.

The Aztecs scored three runs in the 4th inning as Gomez ripped a two-run RBI triple to bring around sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) and Munoz. Freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) followed with an RBI single to score Gomez.

Gomez finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Chacon went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Munoz was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Zepeda finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tapia was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks.

Game 2: Glendale CC Gauchos 9, Pima CC Aztecs 8

The game went into extra innings as the Aztecs took the lead after the top of the 8th inning but the Gauchos tied it on an error and got a walk-off RBI single to end it.
Tied at 7-7 in the 8th inning, the Aztecs took the lead when Chacon hit an RBI single to bring in Tapia.
The Aztecs broke open a 2-2 game with five runs in the 6th inning. Zepeda scored on an error and Tapia hit a two-run RBI double to plate Zylinski-Wrobel and Tsosie-Hood to make it 5-2. With two outs, Chacon drove a two-run homer to left-field to cap off the inning as Pima led 7-2.

The Gauchos scored five runs in bottom of the 7th inning to force extra play.
Chacon finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Tapia went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Zepeda and Zylinski-Wrobel each finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Gomez was 2 for 5 with a run. Freshman Madison Fillman-Moreno (Sabino HS) was a flawless 4 for 4 in the game.
Tsosie-Hood took the loss as she pitched the final inning in relief, giving up one run (none earned) on one hit.

The No. 3 seeded Aztecs will play No. 2 Central Arizona College to begin the NJCAA Region I, Division I Tournament on Friday. All games will be at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher. Game time is TBA.
