Sun Devils Advance to Semifinal Game Against USC

(Berkeley, CA)  No. 4 seed Sun Devil Lacrosse (6-12, 4-7 Pac-12) defeated No. 5 California 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon for their tenth straight win over the Golden Bears. Katie Vahle had a career high save percentage in the defensive battle, as Tate Stokesberry, Teagan Ng, Greta Stahl and Bella Ingrao scored the first Pac-12 Tournament goals of their careers.


To open head coach Taryn VanThof’s first postseason win, the five goals the Sun Devils allowed are tied for the second-fewest conceded in a Pac-12 Tournament game.

Arizona State will face No. 1 USC on Thursday, May 4 at 4:30 p.m. MST for a semifinal game in the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament. The match will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network

Notables

First postseason win for head coach Taryn VanThof.

Tate Stokesberry, Teagan Ng, Greta Stahl and Bella Ingrao scored their first Pac-12 Tournament goal of their careers against the Bears.

For the eighth time in postseason, Kaylon Buckner tallied a goal for the Sun Devils.

Headed into the fourth quarter, the Sun Devils became the first team to go up by two goals in the game.

Mina Scott scored her sixth and seventh career postseason goals in the victory.

Katie Vahle saw 16 goals on net and made 11 saves. Her 68.8% save percentage is a career high for the sophomore.

Gigi Gaspar tallied five ground balls, leading the Sun Devils while also forcing two turnovers. She has the second most ground balls on the team.

Sun Devils scored 50% of their free position opportunities which allotted for three of their goals.

Game Summary

The Golden Bears put themselves on the board with a free position goal, but the Sun Devils answered back with their own free position goal by Kaylon Buckner with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. Tate Stokesberry scored Arizona State’s second goal of the quarter to take its first lead of the night. 

California opened up the scoring in the second period with a free-position goal from Maya Lawliss and shortly after, Kate Rothman added another goal. Freshman Teagan Ng scored her first collegiate postseason goal with 10 minutes remaining in the half. Bella Ingraoadded her 15th goal of the season to take the lead heading into halftime. 

Mina Scott answered Lawliss’ opening second half goal with a goal of her own to keep the lead at one. Greta Stahl put in her first ball in the net with 28 seconds remaining in the period for a 6-4 game. Scott tallied her second of the game to open the fourth period thanks to a caused turnover by Gigi Gaspar. For the final 12 minutes, hard fought defense was the key for the Sun Devils as they walked away with their sixth win of the season.
