(Gilbert, AZ) The California Pacific Conference has named the Park University Gilbert Athletic Communications Department as the Sports Information Department of the Year for the 2022-23 school year. The award was selected based on a vote of all of the sports information departments in the league.
“This is a very humbling day,” said Park Gilbert Athletic Communications Director Preston English. “But this honor is a testament to all of the people who show up at every game and who work behind the scenes to make everything work.”
The office which included English, assistant Lainie Hallows and student assistants Zach Swanson and Madeline Gomes were responsible for the publicity of the Buccaneers 15 varsity sports. In addition, Park Gilbert hosted the Cal Pac Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships and the Cal Pac Men’s Volleyball Championships.
During the 2022-23 season, the department oversaw the mid-year switch to a new website provider and spearheaded the use of streaming service WTSMTV for coverage of the basketball championships which had over 38,000 viewers, a new record for the streaming platform. Play-by-play announcers Joe Pequeno and Doug Franz along with color analysts Charlie Turner-Thorne and Steven Hunter gave the championships an energy and level of professionalism which made the Cal Pac Championships the premiere conference tournament in the country.
Pequeno also lent his talents to the Buccaneer Sports Networks coverage of the Cal Pac Men’s Volleyball Championships in late March.
The Buccaneer Sports Network also provided streaming coverage of the Cal Pac Baseball Championships as English and Swanson provided play-by-play and color commentary on the championships held at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz.
The office also formed a relationship with the online sports magazine 520sportstalk.com to post game and event stories from the school on its website.
“I would like to thank everyone who worked a game or an event this season,” said English. “Everyone who did stats, PA announcing, scorebook, and all of the other jobs on game day, his award is a team award and we don’t receive it without your help.”
