(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s golf team closed out the 2023 season on Friday as it completed play at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.

Sophomore Maria Harrouch finished tied for 16th place and earned NJCAA Division I All-American status for the second straight year after finishing with a four-round total of 311 (75-76-80-80). The last Pima women’s golfer who was a two-time NJCAA All-American was Desiree Hong in 2016 and 2017.

“I am very disappointed with my mental game this week,” Harrouch said. “I learned a lot about myself. Golf is complex and the better I get at this game, the more I understand myself, my habits, my thought patterns and what I need to feel good in order to play well.
“I honestly really enjoyed playing in the wind. It let me be more creative and focus more on what exact shot I wanted to hit. I was struggling mostly with my short game and putting, which I mentally couldn’t get past.”

Harrouch took eighth place at last year’s NJCAA Division I National Championship. This season she won the individual titles in six straight tournaments, including the Southwest District Individual Championship.

Sophomore Angelica Martinez (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the tournament shooting a 328 (80-80-80-88) as she tied for 44th place in the final standings.

“I feel very fortunate to have both Angelica and Maria return to the national tournament this year,” Pima women’s golf assistant coach Donn Hess said. “It was great to see the growth of both of them from their freshman year to now. I am so proud of how they battled the heavy winds and storms we experienced this week and kept battling until the last putt fell. I know both of them expected to play better but regardless of the scoreboard, they played like champions this week.”
