(Mesa, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s track & field team made waves after the first day of the NJCAA Region I Championships on Tuesday at Mesa Community College.
The Aztecs sit in third place with a total of 56 team points. Mesa Community College is in first with 75 points while Central Arizona College sits in second place with 66.
Sophomore Jessica Bright-Schade (Safford HS) claimed the Region I title in the Javelin with a mark of 36.93 meters (121-feet, 2-inches) earning Pima 10 team points. She took fifth place in the event at last year’s Region I Championships
Freshman Brooke Peterson (Mingus HS) took first place in the Pole Vault and captured the Region I crown after she posted a vault of 3.72 meters (12-2.50). Sophomore Candice Pocase (Santa Rita HS) took second place with a mark of 2.82 meters (9-3). The Aztecs accumulated 18 points in the Pole Vault.
Other finishes that earned team points:
Kapualani Magnani (Empire HS) – 4th in Hammer Throw 42.22 meters (138-6) (5 points)
Jackie Trice (Williams Field HS) – 4th in Long Jump 5.33 meters (17-6) (5 points)
Tianna Moseley – 6th in Long Jump 5.09 meters (16-8.50) (3 points)
Annika Arvayo (Salpointe Catholic HS) – 6th in Hammer Throw 41.56 meters (136-4) (3 points)
Psalm Johnson (Union HS) – 7th in Long Jump 5.02 meters (16-5.75) (2 points)
The final day of the NJCAA Region I Championships is on Thursday at Mesa Community College. Events begin at 5:00 p.m.
