Sun Devils Late Surge Comes Up Short

(Los Angeles, CA)  A late Jordyn VanHookhome run wouldn’t be enough as Arizona State dropped its series finale at No. 2 UCLA, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep by the Bruins.

VanHook’s homer sparked a late rally as Alexa Milius walked, and Sara Kinch singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate. UCLA (43-4, 18-3 Pac-12) closed out the win with a strikeout and flyout.

Milius had a single in the second inning that was the only hit ASU had until the VanHook homer. Kinch and Yanni Acuña also drew walks in the game.

Making her first start since April 8 at Utah, Kylee Magee allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in three innings in the circle. Deborah Jones followed with one run allowed in two innings of relief before Mac Osborne finished the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after a walk and three consecutive singles. Magee then notched a strikeout and forced a flyout to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Taking advantage of a single, walk, and error, UCLA extended its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single from the Bruins for a 4-0 lead.

VanHook hit her 18th home run of the season to lead off the ASU seventh and provide the game’s final 4-1 margin.

NOTABLES

VanHook moved into a tie for eighth in program history with her Pac-12-leading 18th home run of the season.

It was her second home run of the series and third in the past four games.

UP NEXT

Arizona State returns to Farrington Stadium next weekend for a three-game series with Stanford. The final homestand of the regular season begins on Friday at 6 p.m.
