Five Goal Fourth Quarter Not Enough Against Stanford

(Stanford, CA)  Despite a five goal fourth quarter featuring a hat trick by graduate Greta Stahl, Sun Devil Lacrosse (2-7, 1-3 Pac-12) was defeated by Stanford (5-5, 3-1 Pac-12) 15-9 to open up Arizona State’s Northern California trip.

Alongside Stahl, midfielder Berit Brookfieldproduced two goals against the Cardinal while senior captain Katie Brodsky, freshmen Teagan Ng, Anna Thornton and Lydia Oldknoweach found the net once. Ng’s goal extends her streak to five games.

Up next the Sun Devils travel an hour north to Berkeley as they head to California Memorial Stadium to face Cal on Sunday, April 2 at noon featured on Cal Live Stream-3 and live stats on Statbroadcast.

NOTABLES:

Greta Stahl scored her first three goals in the Maroon and Gold against the Cardinal.

Anna Thornton scores her first goal of her Sun Devil career.

Helen Park led the Sun Devils in four caused turnovers.

Katie Brodsky tallied two assists while Lydia Oldknow had one.

Buckner leads the Sun Devils in goals (23), points (26), free position goals (8), shots on goal (38), free position shots (12) and ground balls (16). Buckner won Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week (3/28) after her weekend against Oregon and Colorado, her first career honor.

Kaylon Buckner, Mina Scott, Teagan Ng, Kaitlyn Skamas, Bella Gaspar, Colleen Ryan, Zoe Mazur and Gigi Gaspar have all played and started in the nine games this season.

17 different Sun Devils have scored this season with Kaylon Buckner (23), Mina Scott(13) and Teagan Ng (13) leading the pack.

Year of First Goals – Keeley Cleland, Jordyn Behar, Alexa Ford, Kaitlyn Skamas, Tate Stokesberry, Annie Haley, McKenna Riley, Ng, Lydia Oldknow, Greta Stahl, Anna Thorton and Berit Brookfield have all seen the back of the net for the first time as a Sun Devil.

Helen Park leads defensemen in ground balls (16), ahead of goal tender Katie Vahle(15), Gigi (9) and Bella Gaspar (7), Colleen Ryan (6) and Kaitlyn Skams (6).

Park is on an eight-game ground ball and two-game caused turnover streak.

Teagan Ng leads all freshmen in goals (13) and has 15 points on the season.

Zoe Mazur is first in draw controls (46).

Teagan Ng is on a five-game goal streak.

Bella Gaspar is on a three-game caused turnover streak.

In the first few minutes, Stanford grabbed their first goal of the game. Teagan Ng placed the Sun Devils on the board with a free-position goal shortly after. Less than a minute later Berit Brookfield juked the Stanford defender to put the Sun Devils up 2-1 four minutes into the first. Brookfield would go on to another Cardinal just outside the eight meter to tie it up 3-3 with 2:22 in the quarter. Lydia Oldknow scored the only goal for the Sun Devils in the second quarter as ASU went into half with a six goal deficit.

The fourth quarter was headlined by five ASU goals, beginning with Katie Brodsky who tallied the second free-position goal of the game for the Sun Devils. In the final five minutes, Stahl kicked off the Sun Devil scoring with a quick goal assisted by Brodsky. Anna Thorntonsnuck herself onto the scoreboard as she found open space in the middle. Stahl closed out the game with two final goals for the Maroon and Gold making it 15-9.
