(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert baseball team dropped a double header to No. 15 Benedictine Mesa at Legacy Sports Park, losing game one 7-2 and game two 6-1.
The Buccaneers are now 12-26 overall and 9-12 in California Pacific Conference play. Benedictine Mesa who leads the conference is 37-9, 18-2.
Game one started as a pitcher’s duel, as the game was scoreless for the first three innings. Benedictine Mesa got on the board first in the fourth off of Bucs starter Matthew Armendariz with an RBI single. The Redhawks added two more in the fifth to chase Armendariz.
Park Gilbert got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a suicide squeeze bunt by Anthony Marcon to score Travis Moore.
Benedictine Mesa kept putting on the offensive pressure, putting solo runs on the board in the sixth and eight innings and two in the seventh. Park added its final run in the seventh as Moore scored for the second time.
At the plate, Diego Bejarano had two of the Buccaneers seven hits for the game, while Marcon and Logan Livingston each had an RBI.
Armendariz (1-4) takes the loss for the Bucs.
Four errors proved costly for the Bucs as they fell 6-1 in game two of the double header. Bucs starter Shuan Atamanchuk was solid in six innings of work but was hurt by errors by his defense.
BENU put four runs on the board in the first, before adding solo runs in the second and fifth off of Atamanchuk (2-4) who took the loss.
The Bucs were only able to score an unearned run in the third for their only tally in the game. The Bucs outhit the Redhawks 6-5 but were unable to get the runners home as they were 2-10 with runners in scoring position despite getting the leadoff hitter on in four innings.
Cade Maestas had two hits and scored the only run for the Buccaneers.
The Buccaneers have a non-conference game at Arizona Christian on Tuesay, April 25 before finishing the regular season with a makeup series at Saint Katherine next Friday and Saturday, April 28 and 29. This series was postponed all the way back in week one of the conference season.
