Aztecs Softball drops hard-fought doubleheader against No. 6 Phoenix College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (23-16, 19-11 in ACCAC) was in an ACCAC doubleheader battle with Phoenix College (36-8, 27-7) on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Field.

Sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) closed out the day going 3 for 8 with two RBIs and two runs scored while freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) was 3 for 7 with two RBIs and a run.

Game 1: (6) Phoenix College Bears 8, Pima CC Aztecs 7 (9 innings)

The Aztecs forced extra innings, but the Bears escaped after scoring two runs in the 9th while the Aztecs got a run back but left two stranded to end the game.

The Aztecs struck first in the 1st inning but the Bears countered with five runs in the 2ndinning. Down 5-1 in the 4th, the Aztecs got an RBI single from freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS), who later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) scored on an error to cut it to a one-run deficit at 5-4.

Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) drew a leadoff walk in the 7th. Freshman Jazlyn Felix (Willcox HS) came in to pinch run as she was move to second on sophomore Mia Casadei’s (Tanque Verde HS) sacrifice and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Gomez drove her in with an RBI single to tie it at 5-5.

The Aztecs tied the game in the 8th inning when sophomore Alejandra Castro hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Zylinski-Wrobel.
The Aztecs trailed 8-6 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Alejandra Castro scored on a fielder’s choice and with two outs, Zepeda hit a single to put two runners on but Zylinski-Wrobel struck out to end the game.

Zylinski-Wrobel hit an RBI triple in the 1st inning to put the Aztecs up as she finished the game 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gomez also went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Zepeda and Chacon each were 2 for 4 with a run scored. Alejandra Castro was 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run.

Wendy Castro took the loss (8-5) as she pitched a complete-game, giving up six runs (six earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and seven walks.

Game 2: (6) Phoenix College Bears 8, Pima CC Aztecs 5

The Aztecs were forced to play catch-up during the second game as they cut the deficit to one run on two occasions.

Down 5-0 In the 3rd, the Aztecs loaded the bases with no outs. Zepeda was hit-by-a-pitch and Casadei came in to score. Sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) made it 5-2 when she scored on a fielder’s choice. Chacon cut it to 5-3 with an RBI single to bring around Gomez.

The Aztecs made it 5-4 in the 4th inning when Gomez hit an RBI single to score Casadei.

The Bears got a run back in the 5th but the Aztecs cut into Phoenix’s lead again in the 6thwhen Zepeda hit an RBI single to plate Munoz.
Phoenix College scored two runs in the top of the 9th and the Aztecs made it interesting as they loaded the bases with two outs but Munoz struck out to end the game.

Gomez finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Zepeda went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Casadei was 2 for 3 with two runs and Chacon finished 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood took the loss in the circle (5-3) as she pitched a complete-game, giving up eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs play an ACCAC doubleheader at Yavapai College on Thursday in a make-up doubleheader from Mar. 25. First game begins at 11:00 a.m.
