Stephanie Tapia has 7 RBIs as Softball sweeps Chandler-Gilbert CC

(Chandler, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (13-10, 10-4 in ACCAC) picked up two ACCAC conference road wins on Tuesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (5-16, 5-11).

The Aztecs provided plenty of firepower on offense as sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) finished the day 3 for 7 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) also closed out the day going 3 for 7 with six runs scored and two RBIs.

Freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) was 4 for 7 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) picked up both wins on the mound.


Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 6

The Aztecs rallied with nine unanswered runs to take the lead for good.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the 5th inning, the Aztecs scored three runs to retake the lead. Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) tied the game with an RBI single to score sophomore Alejandra Castro.

Tapia followed with a two-run RBI double to bring around Chacon and Zylinski-Wrobel to put Pima up 6-4.

The Aztecs tacked on five more runs in the 6th inning. Chacon, Tapia and sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) all had RBI singles in the inning. Sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) drew a bases loaded walk to bring in a run as the Aztecs led 12-4.

The Aztecs took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Zylinski-Wrobel hit a two-run home run scoring Chacon.

Tapia finished the game going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Zylinski-Wrobel finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Chacon went 2 for 3 with an RBI and four runs scored and Wendy Castro was 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Munoz and Gomez each had an RBI and a run scored.

Wendy Castro picked up the win (5-3) as she pitched a complete-game, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 8

The Aztecs took the lead and held off a rally from the Coyotes.

The Aztecs scored six runs in the 3rd inning. Freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI double to drive in Gomez, who tripled in the previous at-bat, to put the Aztecs up 2-0. Sophomore Alejandra Castro followed with an RBI single to bring in Zepeda. With the bases juiced, Tapia stepped up and hit a grand slam with two outs scoring Castro, Chacon and Zylinski-Wrobel. The Aztecs led 7-0.

The Coyotes scored seven unanswered to tie the game, but the Aztecs countered with three runs in the 6th inning. Chacon, Zylinski-Wrobel and Wendy Castro hit three straight RBI singles to give Pima the lead for good.

Tapia finished 1 for 3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Zylinski-Wrobel went 2 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks while Chacon was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Munoz finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

Wendy Castro pitched in relief and picked up the win (6-3). She pitched three innings, giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout.
