Aztecs Softball split tightly contested doubleheader vs. Arizona Western College

(Yuma, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (9-10, 6-4 in ACCAC) returned to the West Campus Softball Field on Tuesday for an ACCAC doubleheader against Arizona Western College (6-16, 5-5).

Sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) finished the day going 3 for 8 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Fellow sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and five walks on the day.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Arizona Western College Matadors 11

The back-and-forth battle saw six different lead changes as the Aztecs held off the Matadors in the end. The Aztecs scored in every inning.

The Matadors scored four runs in the 1st inning but the Aztecs took the lead in the 2nd. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI double to score freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS). Casadei grounded out but drove in Chacon. The Aztecs took the lead at 5-4 when sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) reached base on an error while sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) and freshman Jasmine Majonica (Flowing Wells HS) scored.

The Matadors retook the lead at 6-5 in the 3rd but it didn’t last as Zylinski-Wrobel tied the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up at 6-6.

The Aztecs went up 8-6 in the 4th after sophomore Alejandra Castro grounded out but brought in Gomez, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. Zylinski-Wrobel hit an RBI single to bring in freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS).

The Matadors scored three runs in the top of the 5th to go up again at 9-8 but the Aztecs countered with three runs of their own. Casadei hit an RBI double to score Tapia to tie up at 9-9. Casadei and Munoz took advantage of Arizona Western’s errors and scored to make it 11-9.

Chacon capped off Pima’s scoring in the 6th inning with a one-out solo home run. The Matadors scored two runs in the 7th inning but stranded the tying-run at second base to end the game.

Zylinski-Wrobel finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Chacon went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Casadei was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run and Gomez finished 2 for 3 with two runs. Tapia was 2 for 2 with two runs.

Sophomore Alissandra Montiel (Cholla HS) picked up the win (1-3) as she pitched three and two-third innings giving up five runs (five earned) on six hits.

Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 7, Pima CC Aztecs 6

The second game featured three lead changes but Pima’s comeback fell short in the 7th inning.

Down 2-1 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs took the lead with two runs. Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a single. Alejandra Castro hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to bring in Gomez to make it 3-2.

The Aztecs added to their lead in the 5th inning when Wendy Castro hit an RBI double to score Casadei. Majonica scored on another wild pitch and the Aztecs held a 5-2 lead.

The Matadors scored two runs in the 6th and three runs in the 7th inning.

The Aztecs started off the 7th with back-to-back singles from Munoz and Gomez. With one out, Alejandra Castro reached on an error to load the bases. Zylinski-Wrobel hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Munoz to cut the deficit to one run but Chacon flied out to end the game.

Wendy Castro finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Casadei went 2 for 4 with a run and Munoz was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run. Gomez finished 1 for 1 with a run scored and four walks.
Wendy Castro took the loss (3-3) as she pitched a complete-game giving up seven runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with two walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday when they host GateWay Community College. First game starts at noon.
