Aztecs Softball falls at Central Arizona College

(Coolidge, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (13-12, 10-6 in ACCAC) dropped an ACCAC doubleheader on the road at Central Arizona College (19-9, 15-3) on Saturday in Coolidge, AZ.

Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day going 3 for 6 with two runs, a double and a stolen base. Sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) had a big hit in the second game to keep the Aztecs alive. The Aztecs scored five runs off nine hits for the day.

Game 1: Central Arizona College Vaqueras 8, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (6 innings)

The Vaqueras took the lead with two runs in the 1st inning and three runs in the 2nd inning. The game ended on a walk-off home run in the 6th inning.

The Aztecs managed four hits for the game. They loaded the bases in the 6th inning but a lineout ended the threat.

Chacon finished 2 for 2 as she reached base three times with a double, a single and a walk. Sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) was 1 for 2 while freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) went 1 for 3.

Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) took the loss (6-4) as she pitched three and one-third innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Game 2: Central Arizona College Vaqueras 8, Pima CC Aztecs 5

The Aztecs took the first lead of the game but the Vaqueras countered with six runs as the rally fell short for Pima.

The Aztecs took advantage of three errors by the Vaqueras in the 2nd inning as sophomore Alejandra Castro and Chacon scored on miscues in the inning to give Pima a 2-0 lead. The Vaqueras scored six in the 3rd inning frame to take the lead.

The Aztecs loaded the bases in the 5th inning and Tapia came through with a three-run RBI double bringing around Alejandra Castro, Chacon and Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) to make it 6-5.

The Vaqueras tacked on a run each in the 5th and 6th innings.

Tapia finished the game 1 for 3 with three RBIs. Casadei was 0 for 3 with two RBIs. Chacon went 1 for 4 with two runs and sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) finished the game going 2 for 3 with a walk. Alejandra Castro scored two runs and drew three walks.

Freshman Genesis Zazueta (Tucson Magnet HS) took the loss (4-5) as she pitched six innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on 13 hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will play their third straight doubleheader on the road as they head to South Mountain Community College on Tuesday for an ACCAC matchup. First game starts at 1:00 p.m.
