(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (11-10, 8-4 in ACCAC) took care of home field on Saturday as it swept GateWay Community College (3-9, 3-9) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
Sophomore Alejandra Castro finished the day going 3 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored while freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) was 2 for 3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Starting pitchers Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) and Genesis Zazueta (Tucson Magnet HS) produced quality innings on the mound.
Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 1 (5 innings)
The Geckos took an early lead but the Aztecs countered with nine unanswered runs to earn the run-rule victory.
Alejandra Castro put the Aztecs ahead for good in the 1st inning when she hit a two-run home run that drove in Zepeda, who doubled in the previous at-bat, to make it 2-1.
The Aztecs put up five runs in the 3rd inning frame as Alejandra Castro came through again with a two-run RBI double scoring sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Zepeda. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) also hit a two-run RBI double in the inning bringing in Castro and freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) to make it 6-1. Chacon scored the final run of the inning after she scored on sophomore Stephanie Tapia’s (Cibola HS) RBI double.
The Aztecs tacked on two runs in the 4th inning as Zepeda and freshman Jazlyn Felix (Willcox HS) scored on errors.
Alejandra Castro finished the game 2 for 2 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Zepeda went 1 for 1 with three runs. Chacon went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run and Tapia was 1 for 1 with an RBI.
Wendy Castro picked up the win (4-3) as she pitched a complete-game, giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts on 57 pitches.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings)
The Aztecs picked up their second run-rule victory of the day shutting out the Geckos.
Zazueta took the win (4-4) after she threw a complete-game, giving up two hits with four strikeouts and two walks on 74 pitches.
The Aztecs took control with three runs in the 1st inning and four runs in the 2nd. Zepeda, Alejandra Castro and Wendy Castro all hit RBI doubles in the 1st inning. Munoz hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning.
The Aztecs took advantage of GateWay’s miscues and scored four runs off errors committed.
Sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) finished 1 for 2 with two runs scored while Munoz and Zepeda each went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Alejandra Castro finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run and Wendy Castro was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

The Aztecs will play their next four opponents on the road. They will head to Chandler-Gilbert Community College for an ACCAC doubleheader on Tuesday. First game starts at 1:00 p.m.
