Wendy Castro throws gem, Zylinski-Wrobel has 8 RBIs as Aztecs Softball scores 28 runs in sweep over Scottsdale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (8-7, 5-1 in ACCAC) picked up two run rule victories on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field against Scottsdale Community College (1-5, 1-5).

The Aztecs scored 28 runs on the day and got big back production from freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS), who finished the day going 5 for 7 with eight RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) went 3 for 6 with three RBIs and five runs scored. Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) did her damage on both sides of the diamond in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 5 (6 innings)

The Aztecs took command and secured the run-rule win with five runs in the 6th inning. Sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) hit an RBI single to score fellow sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) to make it 9-5. Three batters later, Zylinski-Wrobel hit a three-run homer to plate Zepeda and pinch runner Missey Galloway to put the score at 12-5. Freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a triple with two outs and scored on an error to seal it.

Down 4-3 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs took advantage of an error and scored two runs to take the lead back. Gomez, Zepeda and Zylinski-Wrobel had RBIs as the Aztecs put up a five-spot in the inning to go up 8-4.

Wrobel finished the game 3 for 4 with six RBIs and a run while Gomez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Munoz, Zepeda, Chacon and sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) each scored two runs in the game.

Freshmen Genesis Zazueta (Tucson Magnet HS) picked up the win (3-3) as she pitched all six innings giving up five runs (five earned) on 12 hits with three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 15, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 1 (5 innings)

Castro did plenty to help her own cause. She hit a two-run RBI double as part of a six-run 2nd inning. She also hit an RBI single in the 4th inning to make it 10-1. The Aztecs scored nine runs in the 4th inning. Castro finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

She also did her work on the mound as she picked up the win (3-0) after pitching all five innings giving up one run (none earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Sophomore Alejandro Castro hit two RBI doubles in each the 2nd and 4th innings as she went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Zepeda hit a two-run RBI single in the 4th inning and closed out the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Zylinski-Wrobel had a two-run RBI double in the 4thas she went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run.

The Aztecs will play on the road for the next two doubleheaders. They will be at Mesa Community College on Tuesday for an ACCAC conference match-up. First game starts at 1:00 p.m.
