Imhoff fans 15, Faildo and Cazares homer as Aztecs Baseball sweeps Yavapai College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (9-3, 2-2 in ACCAC) got back on track on Tuesday in its ACCAC conference doubleheader against Yavapai College (3-5, 0-2).

The Aztecs took two games from the Roughriders as sophomore Anthony Imhoff (Queen Creek HS) and freshman Alessandro Castro (Pusch Ridge Christian HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

Freshman Benji Cazares (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Aztecs finished the day with 13 stolen bases.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Yavapai College Roughriders 2

The Aztecs rallied in the 3rd inning and took the lead for good in the 6th inning to win the first game.

Down 2-1, sophomore Gage Mestas hit a leadoff double and later scored by stealing home plate to tie the game. In the 6th inning, freshman Antonio Avila and sophomore Rocco Gump (Seton Catholic HS) hit back-to-back singles. Sophomore Luis Garcia (Salpointe Catholic HS) put down a bunt and reached first base as Avila scored from third.

Sophomore Andrew Stucky (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a single and scored on an error in the 1st inning to put Pima up 1-0.
Garcia finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI while Stucky went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Mestas was 1 for 3 with a run and Avila finished 1 for 2 with a run.

Imhoff improved to 3-0 on the mound as he pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with 15 strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Yavapai College Roughriders 5

The Aztecs started off quick but the Roughriders closed the gap before Pima got a boost in the form of back-to-back home runs.

The Roughriders scored a run in the 5th and two runs in the 6th inning as the Aztecs gripped a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Hunter Faildo hit a shot to left field for a leadoff home run to open the bottom-half of the 6th. Cazares followed with a home run of his own to center field as the Aztecs held an 8-5 advantage.

The Aztecs tacked on four runs in the 8th inning to help seal it. Gump hit a two-run RBI double driving in Cazares and freshman David Shackelford to make it 10-5. Garcia followed with a two-run sacrifice-fly RBI, which scored sophomore Joey Adge and Gump.

Faildo hit an RBI single in the 2nd inning and finished the game going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cazares hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 4th and was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Gump scored on an error in the 2nd inning and went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Stucky closed it out going 2 for 4 with two runs while Shackelford finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run and three walks. Mestas was 1 for 4 with two runs and a walk.

Castro got the win (2-1) as he pitched five innings giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs are back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Friday when they host a non-conference doubleheader against Community Christian College.
