Bucs Fall to Division 2 Lees-McRae in Men’s Volleyball

(Mesa, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert men’s volleyball team playing for the second time in as many days at Bell Bank Park in Mesa, played a solid match against Division II Lees-McRae College but fell in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-18). The Bucs fall to 0-2 on the young season.


The Buccaneers were competitive in each set. In the first frame, the Bucs held the lead at for most of the first half of the set, leading 14-13 before a 3-0 run put the Bobcats up for good in the set. The Bucs hit .425 with 12 kills but it was not enough as the Bobcats had 14 kills and hit .345.

The second and third sets went in a similar fashion, as the Bobcats would pull away midway through the set to win. The Bucs hitting percentage went down in each set as they made four attack errors in the second set and seven in the third.

The Bucs made improvements on serve after struggling yesterday against ACU. The Bucs committed 17 service errors against the Firestorm but cut the number down to 10 tonight. The Bucs did struggle at times in serve receive, allowing eight aces to the Bobcats.

The Bobcats had 39 kills to 28 for the Bucs, while both teams only committed 13 attack errors. The Bucs who did not have a block last night against ACU had six total blocks tonight, with 10 assisted blocks and one solo rejection.

Sophomore David Shafer led the team with a career high nine kills and hit .467. Ben Turcinechad six kills and only one error as he hit .312. Hunter Miller had 26 assists.

The Bucs will now hit the road for the first time as they travel up the road to Surprise, Ariz., to take on Ottawa (Ariz.) on Wednesday, February 8. Game time is 6 p.m. at Spirit Arena.
