Alejandra Castro homers but Softball drops first two games at the Great Western Shootout

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (2-5) opened play in the great Western Shootout on Thursday at the Pacific Avenue Athletics Complex in Yuma.

Game 2: Snow College Badgers 6, Pima Aztecs 5

The Aztecs took an early lead in the 1st inning but the Badgers scored five unanswered runs forcing Pima to play catch-up.

Freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) put the Aztecs on the board with an RBI single to score sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS), who hit a leadoff single and stole second base to set up the first run. With two outs, freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) went yard for a 2-run shot on the first pitch to make it 3-0.

The Badgers went up 5-3 with two runs in the 1st and three runs in the 3rd inning.

The Aztecs cut into the deficit to begin the 4th inning as sophomore Alejandra Castro hit a leadoff homer to left field to make it 5-4. The Aztecs left two runners on base to end the inning.

Zepeda came through again in the 5th inning with an RBI double to plate Munoz and cut it to a one-game.

Munoz led off the 7th inning with a single but the Aztecs recorded three straight outs to end the game.

Zepeda finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Chacon was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and a walk. Munoz finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Castro went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Freshman Genesis Zazueta (Tucson Magnet HS) took the loss (1-2) as she pitched two and one-third innings giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will play another two games to close out play at the Great Western Shootout. They’ll face off against Utah State University-Eastern at 1:00 p.m. and the College of Southern Nevada at 3:00 p.m.
