Sun Devil Women fall to #2 Stanford, Skinner records eighth 20-point game of the season

(Stanford, CA)  The Sun Devil women’s basketball team fell in their last contest before the New Year against the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal (14-1, 2-0), 101-69, Saturday night.


Arizona State (7-6, 0-2) was piloted by Tyi Skinner’s 21 points, her Pac-12-high, eighth 20-point game of the season and her fourth in the last five games. Treasure Hunt followed Skinner with 19 points, the fourth straight game she has reached double figures.

ASU tied its season-high in three-pointers (nine), with Skinner leading the way with four makes.

Jaddan Simmons added nine points while senior Isadora Sousa notched a season-high seven points. Center Kayla Mokwuah led the team with six rebounds on the night.

In the last 3:45 of the opening period the Sun Devils outscored the Cardinal 8-4 to cut the early deficit to 13 to enter the second quarter.

The Sun Devils used a 7-0 run in 1:35 to cut Stanford’s lead to 11, but failed to ever get within single digits after Stanford’s initial surge. Skinner ushered the way in scoring at the half with 13 points and three steals, followed by Hunt’s nine points.

ASU added another 7-0 stretch in 52 seconds during the third quarter but was unable to sustain momentum as the No. 2 team in the nation proved to be too much, taking a 19-point lead into the final quarter .

The Sun Devils end their three- game road trip at California on Monday (12 p.m. PST/1 p.m. MST). The game can be seen on Pac-12 Arizona.
