(Las Vegas, NV)  Junior Emily White took second in the all-around as Sun Devil Gymnastics opened their season with a third-place finish (195.775) in the third session at the Super 16 on Saturday afternoon.

Notable Stats

Arizona State (1-2) took third, beating out No. 22 BYU (193.775) while falling to No. 8 Cal (197.475) and No. 18 Iowa (196.225).

ASU’s 195.775 is the second-highest season-opening score of the Jay Santos era, just behind last year’s 196.275.

On bars, this was the ninth meet in a row (dating back to last season) that the Sun Devils scored 49.000-plus.

Emily White took second in the all-around with a 39.400. She scored the first 9.900 of the season, earning that score on beam to tie for second overall on the event. She did not score below a 9.800 in any event.

Two other Gym Devils competed in the all-around: seniors Hannah Scharf (39.050) and Gracie Reeves (39.000). Scharf’s best score came on floor where she anchored and notched a 9.900, which tied for third in this session. For Reeves, this was her first time in the all-around since 2021.

Freshman Kayla Lee made her collegiate debut, competing on beam and floor. She was the first routine of the season as she led off on beam, hitting with a 9.775.

Arizona State Head Coach Jay Santos
“This is a good start. We came out with a little bit of nerves, but we had some really strong finishes on the back half of lineups. When we had mistakes, we showed a lot of resiliency. I think every mistake that was done today is fixable. I’m pretty pleased. We had some really strong routines. We have to clean up a couple things. We were one routine away on each event from putting up a great score.

“Kayla starting her first routine on beam on a podium meet was a great thing to see. Emily had a really good day, Hannah was strong except for the mistake on beam. The majority of the floor lineup, Jo, Em, Jada and Hannah, really did a fantastic job. We did a really good job finishing on bars top to bottom. There was the one mistake by Cienna (Samiley), but she did a great job to fight and finish the routine strong.”

  1. No. 8 Cal, 197.475
  2. No. 18 Iowa, 196.225
  3. No. 24 Arizona State, 195.775
  4. No. 22 BYU, 193.775

Rotation One: Beam, 48.775
After Lee led off with her first collegiate routine and hit, the last four gymnasts had to follow a fall. Reeves scored a solid 9.825 and White had a 9.900. For White, this continues her strong presence on beam as she scored below a 9.825 just twice in 2022. The team was in third after this rotation, which would hold the rest of the meet.

Rotation Two: Floor, 48.950
The last four in the lineup built off of each other as all of them earned a 9.825 or better. Jordyn Jaslow started it off with her 9.825 in the third spot in the lineup. White matched that score and Jada Mangahas built off of that, earning a 9.875. In the anchor spot, Scharf ended the rotation with a 9.900.

Rotation Three: Vault, 48.900
Vault saw all six hit, but no score surpassed a 9.825. Scharf scored that 9.825 in the anchor. Two Devils scored a 9.800: Reeves and White.

Rotation Four: Bars, 49.150
The Gym Devils saved the best for last as they scored their best event score on bars. White was the leading score with a 9.875, her ninth meet in a row (dating back to last season) scoring at least a 9.800 on bars. Both Sarah Clark and Reeves had 9.850s.
