Chappell selected CAL-PAC Player of the Week

(Gilbert, AZ)  Park University Gilbert women’s basketball player Madison Chappell has been selected as the California Pacific Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her performance over the week of January 2-8, 2023. This is Chappell’s first conference player of the week honor. This is Park Gilbert’s first conference player of the week honor this season.

Chappelle had an amazing week as she helped spur the Buccaneers to a 2-1 mark for the week. She posted a double-double in each game as she averaged 16.0 points and 14.3 rebounds over the three-game stretch. She also set and reset her career highs in multiple statistical categories during the week. For the week, Chappell shot 51 percent (19-37) from the field and was 10-15 from the free throw line.

In the first contest against Embry Riddle, Chappell set a new career high for rebounds with 13. Her previous high was 12 set last year against SAGU-AIC when she recorded the only triple-double in school history. She scored 12 points on 50 percent shooting as the Bucs lost a close game on a last second shot.

Against Pacific Union two days later, the Holbrook, Ariz., native set a new career high for points with 20 and tied her rebounding high with 13 boards, six of those coming on the offensive glass. She also added three steals and three assists in the Bucs 51-point win.

To cap off the incredible week, Chappell almost pulled off an improbable quadruple-double. She scored 16 points, set a new career high in rebounds with 17 (one off the Park school record), added nine steals and a career high six assists as Park Gilbert won by 34 points. All of those totals led or tied for the team lead in the game.

What makes these numbers all the more impressive is the fact Chappell stands at only 5-8 and is being asked to play power forward against players 2-6 inches taller than her every night. Chappell is averaging 8.9 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game; both lead the team. She is shooting 50 percent from the floor which also leads the team among players with at least 100 field goal attempts.

Chappell and the Buccaneers return to the court on Thursday, January 12 at 5:30 p.m. as they take on second place Westcliff University at Bell Bank Park.
