Torrance Begay goes off for 21 points and 9 rebounds off the bench as Women’s Basketball tops Arizona Christian JV

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (7-3) bounced back and got a boost from its bench on Monday in a non-conference game at Arizona Christian University JV.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs topped the Firestorm 84-80 in Glendale.

The Aztecs trailed 26-22 after the first quarter but outscored the Firestorm 22-10 in the second to take a 44-36 lead at the break. The Aztecs held a 61-58 lead entering the fourth quarter and outscored ACU JV 23-22 in the final quarter.

The Pima bench scored 48 points and were led by sophomore Torrance Begay (Page HS), who finished with a team-high 21 points after going 10 for 16 from the field. She fell short of a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds and also had three assists and two steals.

Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) posted 14 points and six rebounds while sophomore Jaden Leslie (Dobson HS) added 12 points off the bench.

Freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) dominated the glass as she finished with nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Priscila Varela (Mesquite HS) closed out the game with seven points and nine rebounds.

The Aztecs are off for winter break and will return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium for the Aztec Holiday Classic from Dec. 29-31. They will play Bismarck State College (ND) on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 8:00 p.m.
