Saenz, Jackson and Alexander secure double-doubles as Men’s Basketball beats No. 13 Scottsdale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (8-0, 4-0 in ACCAC) scored a big win on Wednesday at the West Campus Gymnasium as it defeated an NJCAA Division II nationally ranked team.

The Aztecs beat No. 13 Scottsdale Community College 98-84 to remain undefeated.

Up 59-51, the Aztecs took a double-digit lead after back-to-back three-pointers from freshmen Mike Pope and Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS) to make it 65-51 with 13:11left.

The Artichokes (6-3, 1-3) cut it back to a single digits at 76-68 forcing the Aztecs to burn a timeout with 7:45 remaining. The Aztecs followed with an 11-3 run to make it 87-71 and forced Scottsdale to use a timeout. The Aztecs maintain their double-digit advantage to close it out.

The Aztecs trailed 34-31 with 6:00 left in the first half but countered with a 10-0 run to make it 41-34. The Aztecs led 47-40 at halftime.

Sophomore Cesar Saenz (Sabino HS) scored 18 of his 27 points in the first half and finished with a double-double along with 10 rebounds. Saenz also added five assists.

Sophomore Traivar Jackson closed out the game with 18 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Jaylen Alexander posted 15 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Baker also scored in double figures as he had 16 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Gym on Saturday when they host Cochise College at 2:00 p.m.
