(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (6-2, 3-1 in ACCAC) would not be denied in the first quarter and in the end held off a surge to pick up the win on Wednesday against Scottsdale Community College (3-4, 1-3).
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs defeated the Artichokes 75-62.
The Aztecs started the game on an 18-2 run and outscored Scottsdale 26-8 in the opening quarter. They went 7 for 12 from the field and 3 for 6 from beyond the arc. The Aztecs held a 51-31 lead at halftime as they shot 50 percent (14 for 28) and went 16 for 20 from the free throw line.
The Artichokes went on a 15-4 run to open the third quarter and cut Pima’s lead to 55-46 but the Aztecs responded with a bucket from freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) and a three-pointer from sophomore Jaden Leslie (Dobson HS) to make it 60-46 going into the fourth quarter. The Aztecs never relinquished the double-digit advantage again.
Acosta finished the game with a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds. She went 4 for 7 from the field and also had three blocks.
Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) had a team-high 15 points as she went 3 for 6 from three-point range.
Sophomore Priscila Varela (Mesquite HS) scored seven points in the first quarter and finished with 12 points for the game. She also added seven rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Matehya Aberle (Holbrook HS) posted nine points, six rebounds and two blocks while fellow sophomore Torrance Begay (Page HS) added eight points and four rebounds.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Gymnasium on Saturday when they host Cochise College at 4:00 p.m.
