Aiona Johnson leads with 12 points as Women’s Basketball tops Phoenix College

(Phoenix, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (4-2, 1-1 in ACCAC) held Phoenix College to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters as it played its first ACCAC conference road game on Wednesday.

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs defeated the Bears 70-34 after holding Phoenix College (1-5, 0-1) to six points in each of the first two quarters. Pima led 27-12 at halftime. The Aztecs outscored the Bears 22-9 in the third quarter and held a 49-21 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Aiona Johnson scored a team-high 12 points as she went 2 for 4 from three-point range and 5 for 11 from the field. She also had seven rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) fell a reound short of a double-double as she finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. She went 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Priscila Varela (Mesquite HS) and freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) each scored eight points. Varela added seven rebounds and Acosta had five boards.

Sophomore Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) posted four points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The Aztecs will head back out on the road on Saturday when they play at Yavapai College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. The Roughrider women’s basketball program was reinstated as they’re playing in their first season since 2010-11.
