(Flagstaff, AZ) After taking Division I Utah Valley to the brink and losing just in the final minute, the Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team came into today’s game with Division I Northern Arizona with confidence they could compete again. Fortune was not on the Buccaneers side as they lost 111-44 in an exhibition contest to their Big Sky Conference opponents. As this game was an exhibition game, this does not change the Buccaneers 2-0 record on the season.
The game started with the Buccaneers having to play without starting point guard Jayla Reliford and sixth woman extraordinaire Kianna Turenne. Both players were held out for precautionary reasons. Reliford with a bone bruise and Turenne was bumped in the head late in the week in practice. She was cleared to play but was held out just to be safe. Then the Lumberjacks came out on fire going 4-4 including two three-pointers to take a 10-0 lead and forcing Fore to take a quick time out to settle his team. The Bucs came out of the break and scored a quick bucket, but they were never able to get on track the remainder of the game.
The Buccaneers were only able to muster 11 points in both the first and third but managed to post 16 points in the fourth with most of their backups in the game.
Madison Chappell was the star of the show for Park Gilbert this afternoon scoring 12 points and picking up six steals. Freshman Sophie Scott had her best shooting day so far this season and scored seven points in four minutes of action. Freshman Paytin Ballard worked her way to the free throw line eight times and scored six points. Allison DeBerry who got the start in Reliford’s absence added six points with two three-pointers.
The Buccaneers shot 33 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three. Park Gilbert had a tough time with turnovers, coughing up the pill 34 times which turned into 34 points for the Lumberjacks.
The Bucs now have 11 days off until their next game when they open up Cal Pac Conference play on the road at Simpson on December 1. The Bucs went 2-0 against the Redhawks last year beating them at home 57-50 and then again in the first round of the Cal Pac conference tournament 75-51.
