Golf completes day One of the ERAU Invite

(Prescott Valley, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert men’s and women’s golf teams opened play at the Embry Riddle Fall Invitational today at the Antelope Hills North Golf Course in Prescott Valley, Ariz.  The Buccaneer men are in fifth place after 36 holes after a solid first round, but they struggled in the second round.  The women only had two players participating, so they could not qualify for a team score.

In the first round, the men had all five golfers post a score under 80 which was the seventh time the Buccaneers have completed this feat in history and the fourth time they have done it at Antelope Hills.  Josh Smith carded the best score of the morning with a 75.  Jason Smith had his best tournament round as a Buc with a 78.  Noah Blaickner had a 77, Gunnar Hurt posted a 78 and Max Callerman penciled in a 79 which included an eagle on the par 5 17th. Overall, Park Gilbert posted a team score of 308 which was 11 shots behind leader Arizona Christian.

After having everyone in the 70’s in round one, the Buccaneers struggled in round two as only one player, Blaickner, carded a score in the 70’s.  The Bucs posted a team score of 323, 15 strokes higher than round one. Combined, the Bucs had 14 holes in round two where the scored double bogey or higher.

After only trailing the leaders by 11 after 18 holes, the Bucs now find themselves trailing the leaders by over 40.  They find themselves only one stroke ahead of sixth place Whittier.

For the women, Taylor Gransen had a first round 91 which put her in 15th place. She followed that up with a 92 in the second round which dropped her two spots to 17th. Sammie Quilter shot a 92, 103 which still leaves her in the top 20 in 19th place.  The course was playing tough for the women on day one, as only four players broke 80 in each round.

Tournament play finishes tomorrow with an 18-hole shotgun final round starting at 8 a.m.
